devRant collaboration project - a lot of us are thinking of doing a project or projects in the future. I am sure some valuable partnerships will be forged.

My desire is to do something that can make a positive impact in people's lives. Possibly to help people with special needs.

I am thinking about code that extends into the physical world - an Internet of Things project sort of a devThing.

Brainstorming a bit deeper - maybe a mashup of off the shelf components - maybe using Raspberry Pi or the $5 Raspberry Pi. Keep it low cost so everyone can afford it. As an aside CubeSats powered by RP's are being used in outer space saving a great deal of money and providing value.

The great thing is devRant has great coders, graphic design, ux, Raspberry Pi (or similar miniaturization), public relations to get the word out...

I have some examples we can use for inspiration. Let's keep building on this.

I like it. I can provide servers at the very least, with a lot more resources as it matures. What do people need that they don't already have, that we could build quickly, easily, cheaply, and bring to market based on off the shelf components?

    I am IN 🙌🏼

Recently I had an idea concerning this. I was thinking about an assistant that is with all those people all the time as it is attached to the wheelchair. So we could easily use a Raspberry Pi to run a voice (or whatever) assistant that can give you the best possible path to a destination (keeping the wheelchair in mind) or tell you where the most wheelchair-friendly café is...
Sounds crazy but I think that is something we can start with to think about...

OK, that's a good start, so voice recognition, an offline stored map, and an OS that can run an app automatically to facilitate directions. Cost considerations are LCD or not, input options (touch, buttons), storage capacity, a battery. What would a RPi give that a $50 tablet couldn't? Not trying to shoot it down, just being realistic - many companies go under because their product doesn't sufficiently fill a need that other's don't already do at a reduced cost.
  • 1
That is a good point. However I think that a tablet is much harder to program (at least I have no idea about that yet) and with the Pi you can literally do what ever you want, including adding extensions easily or generally scaling its features. @thebrendancarr

    Great points.
Tablet is a possibility. Depends on what we build. RP very small and runs many languages. Not sure on $5 version. RP very low power consumption. Check out CubeSat mashups using common parts in space - RP, webcam. Solar power... Voice is a great idea. If we minimize using hands can be valuable but again depends on the target user and product we come up with.

No idea is crazy. If it seems crazy or impossible to do that is exactly what we want to discuss. Let's make this a stretch project and break new ground. We have the talent on devRant and we have the connections to get what we need.

Steve Jobs had a good quote to that effect.

devRant's growing global footprint will help us with local presence in many countries.
  • 2
@dfox we need your inputs and help :)

When we have a few project finalists we can do an analysis with organizations and users on level of need.

Then prioritize the order of project roll outs.

Maybe if we gather high level ideas and possible technology needed to accomplish by May 22 (2 weeks) we can than review the complete list and go to a deeper structured needs analysis phase for the finalists.

Between now and May 22 we can post a reminder to the community once every 4 or 5 days for ideas and input.

    What does everyone think?

A community project to help people with special needs is brilliant I know a few people who have various needs. Let me know what I can do to help

hey guys? if you want to make a thing to help people with disabilities, you must must must ask people with disabilities and make them a part of the process. otherwise, you're just showing off at their expense. is there a coders with disabilities club we could contact?
  • 1
This sounds like a great idea, I'd really like to be a part of it.
  • 2
i have contacts with local disabilty home carers if this is something that could input - i can demo locally as well as market the idea and such.

any coding support i can help with also let me know :)

ive also got a few contacts in old age care as well if thats a seperate project

    @wildgoosecsharp that's an excellent idea.

can also vouch for the person above who stated if we dont actaully look into the main aims of the intented there is literally no point - knew someone who pitched the idea of a game to a contact i know - basis of the game was read the words and state how you feel about it. Little research was done as the people he intended to pitch to...... couldnt read

oh dam - meradithlynn yiu commented and i refered to you as the person above lol - i totally meant you and forgot to name you :)
  • 2
I expressed the same idea to my talented buddy coders in my university. But I felt none of them were motivated enough. Maybe this is a chance. And I'm new to devrant.

As a father of a moderately autistic boy who is non-verbal, if something easy could be made to help him communicate would be awesome. Like using pictures with moods or needs. There a many apps, but most require reading. He is six and just learning his letters. There is no way he could use one of those apps.
  • 1
An idea that starts with a technology spec? You have to start with the problem you are trying to fix, who it's for etc. Bucket loads of research. I'm guessing you already know this.
  • 0
I'm waiting for the fight over what technologies to use begins. 😉
  • 0
Yes. We need to decide on the problem we want to solve first and then decide on the appropriate technologies. I mentioned a few technologies but everything must be considered. We will not use a screwdriver to hammer in nails.

I am tallying the ideas being suggested. I am interested in @Marowski's comment and insight. Please comment more.

@Jumpshot44 There was a company that was providing free tablets to kids on the spectrum. The object was you paid for their monthly service of apps to help your child. I want to say 98% of them were apps that listed the words for the child to pick out to speak for them. As I said, my son is 6 and can't read yet. I am thinking pictures. The only issue would be abstract ideas.

Now if it could be arranged, maybe it could use Disney or Pixar characters.
Like the emotions in Inside Out.
  • 0
@maroski - i like the idea but it would require licencing for the characters - do we have and gds on devrant maybe we could produce our own characters to use would be less hastle.

was a guy at uni who was creating something along the lines of distracters for kids with adhd - in order to stop them acting out they had an application that would allow them to distract them selfs.

seems we are trying to aim towards 1 certain need what if we provided a service that provided a "distraction / visual aid" to diffrent kids and then each person willing to join in can produce a peice in collab

@dfox I know you guys are super busy. We would value your input when you have an opportunity.
Without devRant we would not be having this discussion and it seems devRant may want to add additional collaborative value. Thanks

Possibly a part of Topic of The Week? Just brainstorming
  • 2
@Jumpshot44 I mentioned this to my wife and she pointed out that it would need to be categorized well and be able to link ideas together. It's not bad for it to have the word with the picture so that kids can eventually learn to recognize the words as well.

As they learn to spell or read they can upgrade to more abstract ideas. Like two people hugging could be used for kids who want a hug, but can't say it.

    @Marowski @wildgoosecsharp
    1) are there any mobile apps or desktop systems that address this exact issue? I can help research.

    2) if we were to run this by an outside expert who would that be at a University or in the medical profession. A large University with a top notch research unit is near me so I will help with that as well.

    3) can we structure requirements a bit more? Don't hold back. Make it a stretch. If Elon can go to Mars let's take a shot 😀

    4) next steps in your opinion.
  • 2
@Jumpshot44 I am a code newbie, so on that front I may not be much help, but I can do research.
I too live near a University that has branches that specialize in what we are talking about.

For the other products my wife has sifted through many. They are either $100+ and usually only usable by one type of device, or they are closer to $20, but suck in features and user friendliness.
  • 1
@Marowski - soon you will not be new at coding. devRant has many of the top coders in the world and their knowledge rubs off on all of us.

We do not want to reinvent the wheel if an great inexpensive program is out there. You mention there are some expensive programs so there price might be an issue for many people. Also, maybe the programs can be proved.

    Continued I'm next post...
  • 1
    @Marowski continued...

    1) can you mention a couple of the expensive programs with domain url if possible so we see the features, benefits...

    2) describe the perfect program you and your wife envision to help children in English not tech or even pseudo code at this point.
That will allow the community to inject ideas.

Hey everyone - this is awesome. Sorry for my slow response (we've been so busy with TechCrunch Disrupt stuff but that's over now!). Our current roadmap is decently short so we will try to work on some stuff to aid collaboration.

Right off the bat, in our next few releases we'll be adding a global announcement bar in the app where stuff like a collab can easily be announced.
  • 2
And although it doesn't translate 100% to collabs like this, "topic of the week" will be added soon which I consider an attempt at a collab effort of rants and we'll be giving out cool prizes (squishy balls!, etc.)

I realize that's not the same thing as this, but I just want to mention that we're working hard on providing features to aid in community efforts like this and we will continue to do that. For the time being though, for ones like this, organizational creativity might be needed :)

@dfox You guys are taking this to the next level. devRant is growing in value to developers and ultimately users globally. Thanks!

I would help you guys by making a Logo or something like this if needed :)
