I personally use Asus, it's quite okay, it's never crashed too bad. If I'd have to buy laptop now I'd consider Dell XPS or MacBook

I have friends at uni that use surfaces. They like it a lot but use it just to make notes during classes. I bought a MacBook and I really can't complain. Would do it again.

@bada if you do not use it for programming though a surface would be nice. But it mainly comes to preference, I prefer paper over pdfs.

I recently went for an Acer VN7 which I found on budget for less than $1000 and great specs. Anyway, I love XPS laptops, I would go for one too. Just dual boot it to Linux if you're not comfortable at all with Windows.
