Quick question: How does devRant get money to run the servers and stuff?

The store offsets some of the costs we have, but the rest just comes out of our pockets right now.

@dfox i know the feeling, been running a free game since 2004, always pay for the server myself, like 1/20 of the cost per year is from donations

@dfox You guys should open a donation portal.... or I should just buy a couple of shirts! Lol

like any decent drug dealers they start by giving away the fixes are free ... then when we all have become heavy addicts they'll start to charge 1$ per rant/comment/like :-)

@JohanO While that's a revenue model many startups use, but no one can do that per rant/comment. The most sensible plan here would be subscription based.

@DarkMukke Nope. Monthly subscription is the simplest form.
Otherwise a fremium model never hurts. For example, linkedin offers certain features to members who pay.

Am i the only one here who doesn't mind seeing ads? I actually like it that way. I don't understand the hate against usual good old banner ads.

P.s: i hate auto playing video ads or popups and interstitials

www.commitstrip.com does advertisment in a good way.

@dfox, please enable some for of donation/subscription monthly payment! I would love to sponsor this initiative on a monthly basis, as do plenty of other devs here.

I think the community wouldn't mind some unobtrusive ads such as those "carbon ads" I see from time to time in dev related websites. They could go as a rant on the main list of rants.

@altermind nah just a one time purchase example $5 for a premium account. No ads unlimited posts :) just an example to help @dfox cover some costs. Where a big community it not fair we are leaching without paying a dim while costs are coming out of there pockets. Another example is have ads on your podcast especially on your YouTube account can help give u guys a couple of bucks :)

Its not that I don't want dfox to earn money to keep devRant up, its just that handling a community is not easy, people don't like paid stuff, freemiums... People like what's cool, and free stuff is cool, it is accessible to anyone at the same level.
Of course, those are just tips 😉
