Freelance developers, how do you get clients?

I am developing apps/websites with a friend and so far er have found our clients mainly on project-listing sites (sites like freelancer.com). My experience is though, that it always becomes a price-race, and with many projects only being small static websites, it just doesn't seem that this is the way to Go.

So if any of you have suggestions on how and where to find larger/more serious clients that will be much appreciated - it should be said that we already have quite a few projects to show in our portfolio, so I think we are ready to take on some larger projects

We use a mixture of social media, organic SEO and business breakfast meetings here in the U.K. Not sure if you guys have breakfast meetings in Denmark, but I'd say we get a lot of business from them

@navster breakfast meetings? Never heard air it but sounds brilliant!

Can you tell some more about it, how do you initiate one?

Basically it's an organised event, each week through a provider, there are a few in the U.K. Such as BoB, 4Networking and BNI. You rock up, have some breakfast and chat with other business owners. We use 4N, with that one you do a 30 second stand up to say who you are and what you do. You then just network with other peeps. Usually you'd be the only web based business in the group, just so it's more likely that you'll make connections without any competition. With BNI it's a bit more scientific, you have to give leads and referrals each week to other members of the group, but it all seems a bit forced. I prefer 4N because it's a lot more casual and relaxed.

@navster that's actually brilliant. In the Netherlands we don't have this meetings, we should have though.

    Thanks for the explanation!

@BikerMouse No worries, you guys should so start one as like a side project, get in there early! I can't believe that there's nothing in The Netherlands like that! We use hotel restaurants, you usually charge x amount per head and the hotel gets a cut. They really are useful.
