I think programming is definitely an art. The biggest difference between programming and other artforms like painting is that you don't want the people who look at your code to wonder what you meant with it. Just my 2 cents.

    Nah, screw that. I'm an abstract artist and so I write abstract code

    Meh, I think artisanry is a better word for what most of us do.
    Compare it with writing: would you call art what most people write to make a living?
