*Not a rant, but a very long vent*
I'm 20 and facing the worst dilemma I ever experienced.
Been working at a company for more than half a year, got the job thru a friend and started as an intern to take care of customer problems, crap they do to PC's, printers that wouldn't work, answer emails and phone calls about our point-of-sale software.
Soon everything started to change, on one day my boss asked my what I knew about coding, all I could answer was about some really basic stuff that I learnt on a previous semester at college, just some very basic coding stuff we got for C, how for loops works, conditions, that kind of thing. Soon I was being asked to code a client management software for our company, I was starting to grasp a little of this wonderful world, soon I could write some more complex code in C#, even did a program that in 30 seconds did a 3 day's worth of work, and then I got assigned to develop a mobile POS application, earned a raise, and man, is this wonderful.
I feel that I really found my place in life, found something that makes me jump out of bed every morning.
But here comes the dilemma part: I'm enrolled in a mechanical engineering school for two years now, and it's my second place already (been enrolled at a agronomy school before that) and I'm starting to feel out of place, in all the classes I'm taking, I cant help but feel that this isn't for me, I don't see myself doing that for a future, but I don't know if jumping to another boat would make it any better or just worse, I don't know how good are my odds at a tech oriented course are, I don't really know what to do with the rest of my life.
Guess I'm just afraid of doing something stupid and regret it later, don't know if I should listen to the voice that shouts to me to do whatever I want to with my life or the one that assures me of a stable path... Don't know if anyone will read this much, but if so, thanks a lot, just wanted to put it out of my shoulders and maybe get to know anyone that has been here. I'm new here, but I feel already at home. ☺

    Can't give much of advice but yeah read the whole thing! If you feel it's not for you, maybe finding something that is will be a good thing. Keep on rocking mate and a welcome for you! 😉

    can't you do robotics afterwards?
    Programming and mechanics. Connecting the virtual world to the physical. That would be a job with potential.

    Finish it. Get the degree. You will regret it if you don't. A degree shows an aptitude for learning and and understanding regardless of the subject matter. Continue to study as a developer, online courses, books, blogs, peer groups, devRant. Keep learning, it's all valid shit.

    If you can, finish what you've started and get your degree.
    Keep your interest in programming and continue developing.
    Both will be useful in the future. :)

    Wow I can't believe I can say this but I did my diploma for mechanical engineering and I can tell ya I felt the same I felt out of place with the classes I did graduate but I couldn't get a job, so I went back to do software development and well I loved every minute of it, honestly the best thing I have done to get to where I want to be.

    I'd say if you really feel that in the morning you want to jump out of bed just to do the job that's probably where you want to be, in terms of needing a degree well experience Trump's a degree any day, this is coming from a guy who has a BCIS and only got a job from a friend.

    My life's goal is to be a game developer because I truly want to make an amazing game(s), sadly found that out after wasting a couple years with my diploma.

    If you can build up a portfolio you can definitely be appealing to recruiters.

    But well finishing your degree maybe something you want to do but I personally would have jumped to where I am today, a bit earlier.

    @heyheni I could, but why wait and "waste" precious years with something that's not appealing when I could jump off to mechatronics and use 80% of the classes I already did?
    It brings both worlds together, but I fear that it can't bring me the same stability that a mechanic's degree could...

    @helloworld I wouldn't throw all to the air and say fuck it, I would just jump boats... Again.
    My boss has a mechatronics degree, everything he tells me about college is just everything I ever wanted, but then, so was mechanical engineering. I'm facing a lot of what ifs right now 😅

    Thanks to everybody to taking some time to read hahaha

    Guess I didn't stated explicitly what I'm willing to do, my college has a mechatronics engineering course, it brings together what I like about both worlds, I really feel that I should do this jump.

    I wouldn't drop out, just change to a less "prestigious" course (at least around here) and I can't help but to think that my odds with a mechatronics degree won't be as great as with a mechanical, that's my main concern right now.
