Customer: What's the difference between an antivirus and an antimalware?

Me: *thinks for a second* So an antimalware program is like if you're on a beach with a metal detector. You're looking around for metal that's already buried in the sand. An antivirus is like actively watching people for if they drop metal on the ground.

Customer: That's an interesting analogy.

Coworker: *quietly* That's a actually a really good analogy...

    At first read it sounded spot on, however both can be buried in the sand, I guess it's how they enter he system and the behaviour after which is differs

    @rantOverflow @Jellyg00se

    This analogy is perfect for an end user who doesn't care about the nitty gritty details. Not to mention no analogy is 100% accurate, as no one thing is exactly like another. I'm happy with this analogy, even if it falls apart at the more technical levels, because it completed the job I needed to do.

    Thanks for the comments!

    Here's an analogy:
    An antimalware software is like an antivirus software.
    An antivirus software is like an antimalware software.
