Got my new apartment and now need it hooked up.

So my dad (an experience developer) messages me and says the new apartment uses Verizon FiOS, $80 a month for TV + Gigabit internet

Well I checked the site and I see there's another plan: internet only at 50mbps... for $40

So I'm like "are you stupid?"

I don't need TV. If I really want, I'll just stream TV using THEIR login

And I don't need transfer speeds of 125 MB/s.... I ain't an online PVP gaming monkey

4MB/s is good enough...

4 mb/s that's not a whole lot.. surely if you stream tv or Netflix _or other online video material_ you will have a very slow stream?

    I'd love 125 mbit/s :c
Stuck at 8 mbit/s, currently upgrading to 20.

Somehow where I live (Denmark) fiber internet is actually quite cheap.
    I have a super fast fiber 300/300 mb/s for only about $45 a month

@MasterSwagMan Holy fuck thats cheap. Must be nice 😂😂

    It certainly is!
Where in the world are you located?

Get this... Romania.... 500/500mb/s at 30€...sooo life is nice...

@FintinaM holy cow... that's great tho!

@MasterSwagMan 800/800 for 80 euros, and with that is also television and phone in the netherlands.

@Codex404 god damn.. is it easy to get a VISA for the Netherlands?
  • 2
@MasterSwagMan hmm as European you dont need one. Otherwise I dont know

@Codex404 ah of course yes.. well with that internet connection I might consider moving

Yo i just got 1gigabit internet (and nothing else, who tf watches tv) for 10$/month lol
  • 4
    @RazorSh4rk nice

Does everyone else know the difference between bits and bytes?

    @MasterSwagMan I can stream cable on 4g.

Assuming HD (1080p) video compresses to 4gb/hr, ~4000mb

    That's 66.6666mb/minute

    ~1mb/s

Don't see why I need a gigabit connection...

    That's

@MasterSwagMan marketing gimmick. Ours bundle it with cable so they can charge another 40$ "for cable TV" and still sound reasonably priced because it's such a great deal 2-in-1

Cable TV ain't worth 40$, I don't even watch TV and all local channels can get over the air in HD..

Im certain that 8 out of 10 people think they download a gigabyte a second

Does anyone kmow where I could get dial-up for free :/

@rusty-hacker I do believe the "rusty" in your name is appropriate. 😂

@No-one thought you'd want in on this.

@billgates a bit is 1/8 the size of a byte, so on a 1 Mbps connect it takes 8 seconds to transfer 1 Megabyte

For me somehow when the ISP that i was using got acquired by another company, along with that our cable, phone, etc, well one day the cable didn't work so we called and told them what was going on and after he fixed it, we talked about how high the bill was and why and gave us a recommendation to switch to another plan that doubled my internet speed for way cheaper so now I'm sitting at about 125mb/s down and 22ish up. So I was pretty dumbfounded by the whole thing lol.

I lived on a 4mbit+/- connection for a while... 3+ years. You can stream videos alright, it was always a bit blurry at first but it would catch up.

Bad thing was you could not have two people stream videos at the same time. And playing games was atrocious. And if you needed to download a large file it would take forever... new games would take days lol

But if you are on 4Mbytes then you should have no issues at all.

    I'm getting a 100mbps at $22 a month!

Come to Australia if you want slow internet. We have DSL for $90 and you'll get 0.8mbits with huge packet loss due to the rotting copper. Oh did I mention it would be on a data quota limit?

Another hardcore gamer (not monkey). So...

4MB/s is 36Mbps which is the speed a 50Mbps gets you...
  • 1
@MasterSwagMan MY Norwegian ISP doesn't even have plans that cheap. Cheapest is 25/25 for 56$. 500/500 is 125$ though, which is not too bad in comparison

I love high speed internet and it has it's uses, but come on lads, gaming and single-user streaming? We gamed on a 56k modem if the servers were not too far away. A Mbit/s connection can handle any kind of gaming, provided it doesn't drop packets or lag (which can be true of a gigabit connection as well). Streaming is more demanding, but if it's a single user streaming 1080p, you can do it with 50 Mbps with enough bandwidth left over for gaming or surfing...
I have 360/36 Mbps and I get just below 40 MB/s as my max usually. That gets me anything pretty fast and if I just take a little bit off I can still stream videos while downloading really fast. And throw in a bit of surfing just for good measure. It's really more than enough for anything unless you want a single huge thing really fast, then you need a faster connection.

Here in the UK you basically can't get internet or tv without also getting a landline which cost a lot
  • 0
I've got 100 down 10 up here in the UK. Can't remember if the top of my head what it costs but it includes TV and phone as well.

@billgates that happens as long as they're alive... My grandmother got mad at my father for not checking in with her for a few days (he had his own business and was extremely busy). She was around 70, he had been living with my mother and us, the kids, for years already, possibly even more than a decade i'm not sure exactly. So yeah, it's super annoying, but it's just the way it is...
