My father-in-law wants me to buy a new computer for him. He's currently using an old Acer minitower running more malware than real software on shitty Windows Vista. He only uses Email (Outlook 2003), Facebook and Youtube. I'm gonna get him a MSI Cubi Intel N3700/4GB/120GB SSD with Linux Mint and problem solved. No more malware/virus calls from him. I'm installing Mint on Vbox right now and I'm loving it from second 0.

    Installing mint in virtualbox? Why?

I'm getting the feeling that now he'll be calling you for different reasons

@Alt-Grrr you're right but my hope is it's less of a change from Vista to Mint than from Vista to Win10. Anyway he'll have to deal with a SO change and I expect less calls if he uses an easy Linux distro like Mint.

@Linux because I don't have the new machine for him yet and I couldn't wait to try Mint. 😅

Ah alright, thought you would let him use mint in vbox lol ^^
You should check out "WMLive". I love that distro

    @karwler what reasons?
  • 2
@jordinebot well, judging by how you described him, I'd assume that he'll be asking a shitload of questions how stuff is supposed to work or why certain things he might try to do won't work

@karwler Hehehe I hope not... He knows how to use YouTube and Facebook (that's 80% of what he does) and migrating to thunderbird from outlook 2003 shouldn't be a big deal (that's the other 20%). He's not a curious person in terms of technology so...

@karwler you would think but as long as its connected, has firefox, and they know how to open firefox. Older people are pretty happy using linux. Atleast in my moms case(61 years old)

I found more bitching from 15-30 years old cause of gameing.

@jckimble yeah I can picture that. maybe I should consider replacing my grandma's win7 with linux 🤔

Get him a tablet? Minimal risk of viruses and a lot easier to use.

@simeg I did the tablet trick with my mother and worked like a charm but father-in-law likes to be on his desktop, headphones on, etc. A computer just suits him better. Thank you for the suggestion though

Hi old man who is not very tech savvy and is stuck in his ways.

I got you this new fangled computer setup with an operating system you've never heard of.

I did this because I hate you.

    👍

@SSDD not my point at all. (Also idk what fangled means)

@Alt-Grrr Ive done this with my parents (from windows XP to Elementary OS Linux) and they loved it from the first second!

@linuxxx @Alt-Grrr Also no weekly calls about crashes anymore and they only use Firefox and Thunderbird really :).
