The world laughed at iPhone when it removed the jack.
Now more companies are doing it, wtf

And I'm laughing at these companies, too, for them never getting my money.

as a manufacturer having extra space will help. as a user a sufficient solution would do it. I don't care if there is a jack or not, just give me something I am comfortable at using and does the job for me

@gitpush Removing the headphone jack is totally anti-consumer.

@filthyranter but the solution Apple made in making headphones as the same end as power cable does work for me, I don't care if I can't listen to music if phone is charging. but again that's me (Typing while my headphones are plugged into headphone jack on my iPod touch :P )

@gitpush How about really highly increased power consumption just so it's wireless, you have to charge one additional device all the fucking time, ...

oh yeah and dropouts. It's really annoying.

@filthyranter iPhones come with headphones that have cable, my friend had it in his iPhone 7 box.
As for wireless headphones it depends, my work iMac wireless mouse and keyboard stay for a month for each charge, and I work 9 hours a day.
Yet you have a point, users will be ok throughout the month but when they run out of battery user is screwed.

the problem with removing the headphone jack in my opinion is that it is not yet depricated. they are tryng to force depricate it by no longer supporting it, which is bullshit. if you want people to use newer technology, you should make them choose it imo.

My problem with removing a headphone jack is that I like to use headphones that are not shit, and I don't like converters. Also the alleged space saving reason is bullshit.

Why Apple removed it in the first place - Apple acquired beats, that’s why. Apple is the type of company where they want you to get every product they sell, and get the new one every time it comes out. When Apple removed the jack, everyone looked to buy AirPods or (hopefully for Apple) a beats product. Apple’s profits had every reason to skyrocket (okay, not that much), because now they could buy bigger, cheaper parts for the iPhone because they have more space, and obviously not have to worry about the cost of the jack itself. Why others follow - Now others follow because they have a large market of people with iPhones, and they don’t want their wireless headphones to go to waste. Also, now they can have some of the same benefits that Apple had for removing it, but not with any drop in sales or controversy.

We'll see. I can live without a jack, but only if I get something else, like waterproofing or a bigger battery. I don't really want to go with any other company than Apple or Google because of the updates.

My current phone has an audio jack and I barely use it anymore since my headphones work via Bluetooth, my music boom box works via Bluetooth, and at home I barely watch content on the phone's screen anymore but cast it to my Chromecast on a TV.

To me the outcry against Apple removing the audio jack was similar to the outcry against Apple removing the DVD drive in the MacBook air.

That's why the decision to remove it makes total sense to me.

There are some that do require it, yet those will not be the mass market. The mass market can survive just fine without an audio jack.

Even if you have music player that you have to connect via a cable: buy a decent Bluetooth music receiver and connect that thing.

@k0pernikus Music quality goes down when it's on wireless vs. audio jack. I use my headphones on a daily basis on my phone and I would never want a substitute because I am a huge music critic. Not to mention Bluetooth is a battery hog
  • 1
@k0pernikus Bluetooth degrades resolution. The only alternative is having a dongle really.
  • 2
@TheBardAbaddon That makes you a special target audience. For the mass market, quality achieved over Bluetooth suffices. It has become good enough.

Idk, me and my buddies talked about it. Us and anyone we know uses Bluetooth speakers or headphones. I get there's quality lose, but I think a large majority of people would take the ease and convenience for a quality lose most won't notice. Especially as Bluetooth continues to evolve.

This hurts us audiophiles the most. Bluetooth isn't a good solution if you want the best audio quality (they claim that Bluetooth 5.0 is "lossless" but I never trusted wireless technology enough to believe claims like this) and there aren't many good USB headphones out there. 3.5mm is still a standard in anywhere but phones (and a good one, it has no flaws and USB-C is no better at reproducing sound than it), and since headphones intended for professional use still come with it I doubt that the jack will ever stop being used. Now, I bought good earphones, earphones that weren't cheap. Why should I replace them for something ultimately shittier? As for the phones themselves, I've got the HTC 10. The HTC U11 measurements came out and I was surprised to see that it's audio quality had totally gone to shit. So far the only real replacement for my phone is the Xperia XZ Premium. I hope that companies like Sony and Samsung will keep rebelling against shitty practices like this.

@dannydam PS: Sorry for the long rant. I've just been annoyed by this crap for a really long time now.

Now that I have Bluetooth headphones I don't use the jack often.

Ever since I started using Bluetooth headphones I don't use it anymore. Still, maybe some like them for what ever reason?

@polaroidkidd Exactly, it should be a decision made by the user, not by the manufacturer. I blame Apple for this mentality amongst manufacturers.

I actually use a bluetooth headset. But somtimes it is empty, and sometimes my phone is close to empty.

I then plug the charger in my headset and phone, and connect them through the jack.
Since the headset doesnt need power to work through the jack. This way I can listen to music while both are charging.
    Apple can't do that anymore

Something I'd like to add: High-end headphones that are not wireless... how are you supposed to use them without a jack?
