Anyone else feels technology didn't have a major turning point in a while?

I mean, since the late 1980's we had an explosion of technologies:

Gaming consoles
Macintosh
Windows
GNU/Linux
World Wide Web
Smartphones
The rise of advanced web applications and JavaScript

But now? It seems like stagnation for the past 5-10 years or so.
Sure here and there there some nice stuff(like Cryptocurrency, Cloud services, IoT), but nothing that feels completely game-changing.

What do you think will be the next thing that will completely change our lives?

Feels like a huge meme bubble to me.

Best thing that came out of it so far was Tay the Microsoft bot who became redpilled.

It's a joke. Nobody wants to walk around the street or play games at home with a stupid visor strapped to his head.

Neural networks and AI, self-driving cars, programmable matter and the new ugly iphone :))

@clovisIrex unless Pokèmons are involved, apparently

@clovisIrex Pokemon Go and the dancing hot dog on Snapchat beg to differ.

Although it's in the developmental stages, proper VR could become a reality. (See Sword Art for my definition of proper VR.)

@jhh2450 not to mention the erotic dolls/sex machines in Asia

5G might. It's a bigger thing than most people think. Allows direct communication between links (say, cars) without going through the telecom network.

Other than that, and perhaps some better applications of AI I don't see the not too distant future too much different from now. Everything will keep improving gradually unless there is some real game changer. And I'm not talking about a new apple emoji library

The main difficulty in getting some new tech to make a difference is to get it outside of the realm of academia and into consumers' hands - which means making it into a product.

AR is getting there now, and predictions are that it will make quite an impact in the near future...as soon as all the kinks are worked out and developers figure out what things to make with it that the masses will care about. We'll see.

Google Glass, dual use of phone as Desktop (looking at Samsung Galaxy Note 8 + DeX station), Raspberry Pi as SNES console and as Farmbot.io, Progressive Web Apps, and a few others than AR and VR.

i believe we're just used to technology nowadays few things surprise or amaze us but there's plenty of new things happening everyday

@Tychus True. My phone can start my car. My car can phone me to let me know it made an appt for maintenance. Other cars do way more. There is some cool stuff happening.

I feel like the biggest innovations have been in the identity theft sector. There have been more leaks and sites broken into in the last few years than I can count. Hacked elections and power grids... Really the most innovative people have been hackers for like 5 years in my opinion.

@clovisIrex It seems you don't really noticed most of the AI tech you're using yourself. ^^

Machine translation, image recognition, incentive recognition of human speech, tagging of objects on images, composition of music, etc.
These are only some of the appliances of machine learning/AI.

We're still far away from general AI, but specific AIs are ubiquitous.

I don't really like the phrase 'AI' itself though - it's more philosophical than technical (what's the definition of intelligence?). A way better term in my opinion is machine learning.
