    There's ads (I think).

good question. i for one am curious to know too

Maybe they sell our personal details ;)

    I doubt it's advertisements.

I suspect most people are running adaway on their android phone or something since we are all devs.

@zombie01 i don't see any ads on devRant. and I don't have adAway installed.

@tisaconundrum even free apps have ads.

anyways, my comment was a reply to an earlier content which stated devrant makes money through ads.

We don't make any money right now. As people said, if there were ads, you'd see ads :)

The first monetization will be the swag store which should be going live within a week, though we don't expect to make that much from that and it's more just to cover some of our costs.

And if there wasn't so much demand for the store we probably wouldn't have even done that yet, but since so many people seem interested in devRant merch, it makes sense to offer it. We're starting with just a few items but can add more stuff quickly.

No revenue as of yet. We've got some thoughts, but they'll be further down the line. We're open to ideas, and want to keep devRant cool. How do you guys think we should generate revenue?

@tisaconundrum I'm not sure what are you asking about.

but if you are asking if there are free apps with ads, yes that's true.

and you might have seen a lot of apps on the play store that offer apps with this strategy.

they offer apps to public for free but they have ads integrated in the apps in numerous forms like banner ads, interstitial ads, native ads etc.

so they earn through the clicks made by users on the ads and the impressions i.e. the number of ads being shown to the users in a day.

most of the games have ads integrated within them.

of course there are ads on free apps. But they have to be programmed in. Just as i make a website on my own server, ads don't just manifest in it. There has to be code to allow it to exist in the space I provide for it.

It's very obvious that this app was not built with ad revenue in mind.

    @dfox @trogus
Install a small bitcoin miner that mines one coin per year per user and lays dormant for the rest of the year.

@tisaconundrum i was just answering your comment just because an app is free, doesn't mean that it can't have ads it.
