Client just informed our support that they solved their own forgotten password problem by clicking the "forgot password" button in our app. They say they are now awaiting the email with the password recovery details.
One problem: we don't have a forgot password button in our app.9 -
This is how my day has gone so far:
1. In car, see advert about hackathon
2. Look it up, see tickets go on sale in 30mins
3. Read more about hackathon, apparently tickets go within minutes
4. Get tickets, print
5. Printer out of ink
6. Accidentally deleted ticket, can't reprint
7. No more tickets left so can't get another
8. Spend hours with data recovery tools
9. Remember recycle bin. Reprint ticket

Me: Sorry X I won't be able to continue my job search. Currently in hospital got hit by a car.
Recruiter: I'm so sorry to hear that hope your recovery goes well.
2hrs later
Recruiter: just a catch-up - when did you say you're getting discharged?

Suddenly my KDE neon installation didn't want to start anymore. (emergency recovery shell)
Immediately searching for solutions, praying for the best...
Saw a suggestion about removing any custom /etc/fstab entries. Removed an entry i added earlier today.

Decided to try and remove everything google from my phone by using a root app uninstaller since my phone runs the stock rom.
Thought it would break my phone and was preparing for a recovery flash...
I now run a stock rom without anything Google 😍
Even signal works fine with a background websocket connection.
Google, unkindly go fuck yourself.24 -
TL;DR: disaster averted!
Story time!
About a year ago, the company I work for merged with another that offered complementary services. As is always the case, both companies had different ways of doing things, and that was true for the keeping of the financial records and history.
As the other company had a much larger financial database, after the merger we moved all the data of both companies on their software.
The said software is closed source, and was deployed on premises on a small server.
Even tho it has a lot of restrictions and missing features, it gets the job done and was stable enough for years.
But here comes the fun part: last week there was a power outage. We had no failsafe, no UPS, no recent backups and of course both the OS and the working database from the server broke.
Everyone was in panic mode, as our whole company needs the software for day to day activity!
Now, don't ask me how, but today we managed to recover all the data, got a new server with 2 RAID HDDs for the working copy of the DB, another pair for backups, and another machine with another dual HDD setup for secondary backups!
We still need a new UPS and another off site backup storage, but for now...disaster averted!
Time for a beer! Or 20...
That is all :)4 -

Bought a second hand phone because my current one drains too fast (battery).
Flashing through the recovery doesn't work, I need Odin.
Only windows installation I have left (spare laptop I hardly use) crashes every time I boot up.
Linux version of an alternative is downloadable but the site gives a shit ton of errors.
Well fuck me sideways right now.19 -
Was trying to fix my old MacBook Pro (From about 2011, it's served me well, and I ain't letting it die!)
Tried to do an internet recovery, and learned that Mac's do indeed have a BSOD... this is going to be fun to fix.7 -
Yesterday evening I'd been to Lenovo service center to get a battery for my personal laptop.
Sales guy: Sir, I can see that your laptop had Windows 8 when you purchased it. If you want I can give you a one key recovery disc for that.
Me: Thanks a lot sir, but I run Ubuntu on my laptop. And if you are insisting, I can take that recovery media and install it on my uncle's laptop.
Sales guy: I'll get back to you on this.
*End of conversation* 😂6 -
FRIENDLY REMINDER: Fucking save your goddamn work. Thanks.
- Your friendly neighborhood dumbass who just lost 14 hours of his life because his computer crashed.
P.S. Normally not a problem when working on code because I'm forced to save and commit with Git. Unfortunately I was balls deep in Adobe motherfucking illustrator working on wireframes, and didn't have doc recovery turned on.6 -
Today I broke our testing server.
I accidentally (don't even ask, I'm stupid) renamed the /lib folder and nothing worked anymore. Not a single bash-command. I had to shutdown the server and reboot it with a recovery-cd to rename the folder again. Luckily it all runs in a vSphere so I didn't even had to stand up from my desk.4 -
Me trying to help a friend recover his Facebook account.

me: Okay check your Gmail app and recover from there.
friend: I don't have a Gmail app, I only have an email app.

Investigating a "bug"(turned out to be user error) on the production servers, accidently wiped out the permissions for 1,800 users.
Thankfully was able to recover them in under 10min. God bless a solid disaster recovery policy.1 -
Pro tip:
Make sure you can RECOVER from your backups.
It's all well and good backing this and that up, but make sure that when the shit really hits the fan you can recover.
I've now 4 days into recovering a raspberry pi that ran:
Pi-hole
Snort
DHCP
VSFTP
Logwatch
Splunk forwarder
Grafana
And serveral other things... I've learnt my lesson4 -
Google has a password reset procedure so intense, that even if I can sign into my recovery account and give them the code from there, use 2 factor auth and give them the code from there, tell them my recovery phone(s) number(s), give them my mother's father's mother's late cousin twice removed daughter's maiden name, and whatever other security measures were set in place, I can't get a fucking password reset. Thanks Google, fuck you.3

Typical interaction in any XDA development thread:
User: How do I put these ROMs on my phone? Plz halp!
Me: ROOT -> flash RECOVERY -> enter recovery -> flash ROM -> flash Gapps -> profit.
User: How to get the roots? Can halp me?
Me: You're in a Nexus forum. There are directions on how to root everywhere.
User: I can't find. Plz halp.
Me: Fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash recovery.img, flash SuperSU, flash ROM...
User: Where I can get fastboot?
Me: *link to Google developer's page*
User: Can you just tell me?
Me: No, you need to figure it out, so you know what you're doing.

User: HALP! I use toolkit for to get roots, and now phone won't come on! How to fix?! Halp, halp, halp!

I accidently lost a whole tables data today. Lucky me I also created a XML-file on the server which was for printing.
I parsed the files back into a simplexmlobject and recovered most of the lost data. 💪13 -

At one point, my laptop's hard drive went down. Turns out, windows had written some garbage data to the mft, and fucked up the file structure. Luckily i was able to restore a big chunk of the data using recuva. I cleaned the disk after saving the most important files, cleaned the disk, reinstalled windows. All good so far. I put the laptop's drive and my recovery disk into my desktop to put back the files. During the install in forced me to make an account, which I wanted to delete. So I ran "rmdir /users /s" and went to grab a cup of coffee. Turns out, cmd was pointed at my recovery disk instead of my laptop disk. My whole backup wiped.1

I've become addicted since it fills me with delight to read all the rants.

I decided to tweak my two years old-mild overclocking on my main/home pc, to get more juice out of it.
Started with small steps running benchmarks each time I upped the clock.
Didnt crash me once up until it crashed while windows was booting after restart.
I thought to myself, that's normal, now I just have to lower it a bit until I find the sweet spot.
After windows finished crash dumping, restarted, lowered clock from bios, and headed to boot windows.
Windows recovery came up to scan my installation, pretty normal after a bsod.
I was waiting for it to finish, thinking that ofc there is no error you silly windows, until the recovery said that it could not recognize the error.
Proceeding to boot normal windows via the correspndent button in the recovery, the recovery itself came up again scanning for errors. I waited again only for the same outcome, and restarted my pc.
Yeap the recovery again scanning for errors.
How the hell did my boot became corrupted after just a crash. I've been fighting since yesterday for hours to fix this shitty situation but to no avail. I really dont want to clean install...
I couldnt even sleep well last night thinking that I have to fix this after work today...
Fuck my life, fuck windows3 -

Just wanted to root my phone again.
My carrier had an update but unrooting did not help to get it installed.
What it did though, was restoring my recovery partition.
So booting my phone in recovery mode, saying twice that I want to reset my phone (just the layer before booting into recovery).
Aaand... It actually erased. 😮
So having little sleep tonight because I need to install all my necessary apps again.3 -
After one month of coding on Internship (doing website and app for them), I accidentally deleted folder with all code from my MacBook.

Booted my laptop in windows 10. Forced to install the new updates. Ubuntu partition got deleted.
Fuck my life, how can get Microsoft away with that? That's so stupid. Now neither Ubuntu nor windows 10 is booting and I have to perform a boot repair and recovery with a live CD...5 -
This one happened to me two years ago:
Off on holiday overseas, just arrived and decide to check my Emails. Easy peasy..."Hey, we noticed you're logging in from a different country. We sent a security code to your backup account."
Welp, fine, login to my backup account: "Hey, we..." Can anybody guess the problem here? Yep, my primary account was the backup account for my backup. Lovely circular dependency.
Microsofts solution: Play the guessing game, where you name us Emails, Contacts and Folders to prove it's yours and we might unlock your account... or not (managed to get it back on the 2nd try)
Thank you Microsoft for ensuring my workfree, email-free holiday.2 -
Got pulled away from the beauty of code yet again today to moonlight as tech support. Two people in my office got "bitlockered" in the same day... Imagine turning on your computer and finding out it needs a bitlocker recovery key when you never enabled bitlocker. Thanks Windows 10 + Dell.11

Fuck I am to stupid to set up an ubuntu.
I just installed ubuntu as a dual boot on my notebook.
But now I can't boot it.
I mean I can boot it but only if I go to recovery mode first.
Any Idea what I could do?3 -

So my OP6 is supposed to arrive in a few days... Hopefully and wanted some advice so I don't brick it.
I want to root and was wondering how safe it is these days.
Last time I did it was years ago for my OPO but I'm not sure how much things have changed or if anything different with Oxygen.
I'm running on TWRP, SuperSU and Lineage 14 now.
I saw some guides that suggest TWRP and Magisk (hides root better?).
https://appuals.com/how-to-root-the...
But don't plan to flash custom ROM as it seems OP now works best with Oxygen? And maybe something won't be supported in Lineage?
And will flashing recovery mess anything up... For some reason I recall OP had a stock recovery which would get overwritten?3 -
Whenever I have my mac crash and corrupt its OS, I just get a backup harddrive and it copies itself FLAWESSLY. I have all my programs, settings, settings in programs and files.
When Windows crashes, and I use the recovery tool, I LOOSE EVERYTHING. The only thing I get to keep are my files, and they most of the time have permission issues after a restore.
Windows is like the toddler that stares out to void of existance and can't do anything but drool on their shirt, while its parents say he's highly gifted.
Fuck me we're able to choose between only a few OS'es that my clients know and allow me to work on but things like this just make me want to go be a chicken farmer or something.25 -
“Why do you hate windows”
because this retarted os failed to boot today, i went to recovery mode and it automatically put windows boot manager above grub

Updated my react native version to 0.34
It's all fucked up. Everything is broken. No sign of recovery.
There goes another one of my unfinished personal project -
I use google auth for 2FA. Had to factory reset my phone for some reason. Meanwhile, github one day forced me to change my password. So I used the back up recovery code to change the password and then logged out. I was in a hurry and actually forgot to set up the new 2FA. But hey I have got the recovery codes right.
But, guess what? The recovery codes are not working anymore! Wtf github? -
Fooling Windows is easy and fun :p
My friend got logged out of windows and recovery option was saying to wipe the syatem. There was important data in the windows ( photos, videos , project ) so I thought of a simple solution.
Booted Linux in USB and live booted it on the system. Linux can read the files from window OS. Simply copied the data to hard drive.
Windows be like Am I a joke to you9 -
when a dev with absolutely no knowledge of the systems or whatsoever, tells a client "sure, easy. we can get your password if you forget" and that client then comes to you and doesnt understand he has to use the recovery function because its encrypted using a slow oneway hash...
needless to say, that dev thought passwords were stored in cleartext.. -
FOR FUCK SAKE Lenovo
bought a Lenovo IdeaPad 700 for my study and added extra ram. the fun began, my battery started jumping from full to empty and now with the extra memory far away back to the factory it is still happening now the store and Lenovo told me to use this piece of shit to go back to factory and see if it still happens.3 -
No idea what the fuck just happened, but my home router just dropped the internet connection and started demanding that I change the admin (default) password.
Now, I know that default passwords are bad and all that, but why the fuck now? This thing has been sitting there for over a year, and it only decided to complain now?
There have been some weird things going on lately, and I'm starting to worry that some of my systems may have been compromised in some way... but I'm not sure what/how, nor how to look for it...
Any tips for identifying a breach and disaster recovery?11 -
So I just acquired a Samsung galaxy S3 running Android 4.3 with Clockwork mod recovery off friend, and last night it ran out of battery. Then I tried charging it. It's not charging or turning on. Any ideas what's going off?8

I guess my terrabyte drive that failed on me. Killing my psu in the process. It malfunctioned roughly 3months after installing. Luck, i had warranty, badluck, no backup and no recovery program that could do the trick.1

I just fucked up real bad:
My phone was giving some error about not being able to install an update. Fair enough, i think to myself, so i try rebooting. Still nothing...
I then remember that i at some point OEM unlocked it for some testing, so i start up adb and see if i can connect during the update process. I can't. This is bad: I can't get into my home environment, nor can i connect with adb
Then i try booting into recovery, but instead of booting to ACTUAL recovery, it boots to some custom made "E-Recovery" made by huawei (my phone is a huawei p9 lite), which only gives me the option to download the update, which crashes, and no way of resetting. However, from here, i am finally able to connect to my internal storage via hisuite to make a backup
Next up: Bootloader
So i next load up the unlocked bootloader to try and manually flash the update. That works great, but it still wont boot normally. So i figure: it must think my device is in fact a different device. At this point i'm pretty fucked: Even though i have my data backed up, i can't manually download the update from huawei's site because i don't have the right keys, and i can't download an OTA because their site sucks and half of the downloads don't work, including the one i need. So now i'm stuck here with a bricked phone because EMUI doesn't know how to install an update.
I then did the stupidest thing i have done to date: i wanted to flash a custom recovery image over the "E-Recovery" in order to do some troubleshooting, but instead of writing
"fastboot (mydeviceid) flash recovery recovery.img"
I wrote
"fastboot (mydeviceid) flash boot recovery.img"
Meaning i flashed my BOOT partition with a custom recovery image that turned out to not be able to run. Great! Now i've totally fucked my boot sequence
I can't call their support line either, because as soon as they realize i've tried to restore it myself, and therefor had my OEM unlocked, they basically just hang up.7 -
Can I have one Ubuntu base update after which I *do not* need to go to recovery mode to reinstall Nvidia drivers, and then CPR pulseaudio into function?11

Was digging through an old HDD's OEM Windows recovery partitions and found FON-format fonts that are accurate to several old systems. Several Commodore and Amiga ones (some for 80-char mode too!) and lots of DOS ones. They have names and everything, but I can't use them after installing them... (there were a few blank ones in there too, which is odd...)

I’ve just fired up Ubuntu for the first time in a couple of years on a laptop while doing some data recovery. I use windows and Mac in a daily basis.
I’m tempted to switch, I forgot how much I missed Ubuntu1 -
I reflashed my Oneplus One because for some reason it wouldn't boot into OS. It would just shut off after it boots.
Recovery was fine though. So thought it was a ROM issue, sideloaded the latest copy.
Still didn't work so as a last ditch effort I plugged it into the charger it.... figured i'd deal with it tonight.
Well now I turn it on again and it boots... Power bar says 71%....
Somehow it lost 40% power from just sitting on my desk a week unused.... or maybe i just remembered wrong. But still strange I could turn it on and even sideload from Recovery...1 -
Sorry yesterday installing LineageOS because wanted to Android 10 and got tired of OxygenOS replacing recovery and root every time it updates...
The build failed and bricked my phone so installed Lineage Pie.... so same as before...
Then found out today there an app that will indeed OxygenOS 10 and for all future updates can auto install and keep root....
So now reinstalling OxygenOs...7 -
Seems like the #1 rule of thumb in hacking is
"if you can't break it, make it irrelevant".
Seems to be true because god some of these OEM recovery discs are just... awful at securing themselves. -

People at my home come to me every time they forget the passwords for their emails with no recovery options set and then ask me to recover their password. When I say I can't, I hear the taunt “what's the point of being a software engineer when you can't recover a password" :[
So a while back I added my email as recovery option to everyone's email. Life is good now.2 -

So one of my co-workers had issues with his MKP 2010, it wasn't booting up, wasn't charging, basically acting as a brick. He went everywhere around the office asking other to revive it. I was the last person - my duty was to take out the hard drive and trash it.
I asked him if I can keep it, he allowed me to do so.
After a couple of days I got back to it, installed a hard drive, which I had from my friend from a while ago.
- Played around with charger, got it charging
- Boot it up to recovery mode (I was very excited when I saw that globe spinning)
- The Wi-Fi didn't connect, used LAN
- Formatted drive, installed OS
- Got to endless loop of recovery mode
- Found out that the digits on the keyboard type lower line of letters.. :/
- Boot to safe mode - worked
- Endlessly booted to recovery mode as I tried to get to boot menu
- Realized that the left Shift, Control, and Option does not work
- Used external keyboard and got to boot menu
- Still no success with booting to regular mode
- NVRAM reset!!!!
- Booya! It works!
Should I bother and replace the keyboard? I mean it doesn't matter that much, probably will give it to my mother :)1 -
How can you recover data from a ticking harddisk (fell on ground and head is broke)?
I've contacted some persons in market but they are doing it for the price of 3 new HDDs.
Is there any chance to DIY ? Share your theories and experiences.6 -
When you roll out a new system is disaster recovery testing on your roadmap? For example, do you do failover and have users work through a comprehensive test script and have them sign off before going into production?1

I hate Linux from the bottom of my heart.
Argh...
I have a SLR camera. After a few shooting sessions I inserted my SD card into my Arch Linux machine. For some mysterious reason it wouldn't ever umount, saying target was busy (nothing opened on it btw). So I just removed my SD card and, alas: all of my photos are gone.
Anyone knows how to fix it?9 -
Why did my Windows 11 computer decide to go into recovery mode and let me do nothing but completely reset my computer 😡 this is why you back things up. Just gonna sit here for hours now while reinstalling visual studio etc 😭8

Hey if your company refreshing / retiring laptops for the latest greatest - you might want to think about using for disaster recovery. Store them in another location or home. Push out updated image automatically. Recently saved a company 400k recurring expense with this strategy.

Just wanted to make a clean install on my iMac. What could possibly go wrong?!
Cleaning the hard disk was interrupted by a process running (kextcache). Catalina wouldn't install ("Incomplete systen on target device". Dropping the terminal I could somehow force unmounting and wipe the disk. Had a BSOD in between. Catalina would still not install ("Failed to install pre boot volume"). Later erasing the disk got blocked by the kernel itself. Felt like trouble and it was: Next time I was greeted with a blinking folder containing a questionmark instead of the bitten Apple.
Last resort: Internet recovery. Installing El Capitan was said to take 7 hours so I took a USB time machine backup of latest Catalina. Installed it, but on reboot it get's stuck when progress bar is at 100%. But at least I've a working recovery again. Yeah, progress!5 -
Fastboot I LOVE U!!!!

LineageOS recovery sucks, has no terminal so can't disable magisk modules... only can mount system, not data....
So dumped LineageOS's payload.bin and flashed the clean boot.img11 -
I have 2FA enabled on NPM so it would shut up about it, the recovery codes are in my password manager, right next to my secure randomly generated password.

So my friends USB drive suddenly doesn't work. It shows up in Windows' device manager (with no exclamation sign) but not in My Computer or even Disk Management (So I can't partition it) Reinstalling drivers doesn't work either. When trying to mount it in Linux, Linux complains that it can't see the drive. fsck and gparted don't read it either, but it shows up in lsblk. Dmesg complains it can't read the partition table (error -110). Any of you guys have bright ideas? Nothing like this has shown up in SO before so I've asked in both here and SO. Any ideas?12

When a reboot kills your Docker service and the recovery script bricks the hardisk, it would be nice to have a not so old backup

FEAR OF DATA LOSS
Resolution => backupS
1: external drive (or NAS)
2: cloud storage (maybe multiple services)
3: git repositories
After all these backups you are kind of demigod of data recovery...8 -

What I tell every Admin Padawan and I hope it will help you, too...

Whatever you do on any system, always make sure you know and are able to revert your changes so you can return to the last working system state.
---
It is basically somewhat similar to "always have a backup". But it goes much further in my opinion because it also implies that you know for certain that a recovery works as well since:
"Nobody wants backup, everybody wants recovery" -
Try leveraging retired laptops for disaster recovery. Companies can realize resilience and save a fortune doing this. Hey, if everyone evacuated your office right now could you continue to keep your critical processes going?2

My first #hack is that I once opened my friends account on my computer using the Google recovery question which he kept as his favorite sport . Once in I changed the password and informed him that his account was hacked..lol you should see his face .later I told him he put his recovery question to be hard to be guessed ....lol I think he learnt the lesson the hard way...well after that I got to know about internet ethical rules and there ends the matter

So what are everyone's predictions for Bitcoin on the 31st. Rise or fall? Maybe a bit of both? Recovery times? Impact on other cryptocurrencies?
I'm expecting to see some short lived, possibly huge drops, across the board, followed by it shooting back up within a week. Interesting time though.
Hope you're all are able to cash in, if there's anything to cash in on.
Good luck!2 -

I'm Paul Ryan, and I'm excited to tell you that I've finally found a trustworthy cyber expert who deals with lost bitcoin issues/recovery. I lost all of my money after being misled into investing in stolen bitcoin a few months ago. Despite the fact that I was in a bad circumstance, my sadness was short-lived because a coworker had told me about (recoveryexpert at rescueteam dot com), a company that deals with Recovery Solution. I was able to reclaim the money that had been taken with the help of Recovery Expert. I was able to regain my $155,000 after being informed by another group of hackers that it had been permanently lost.2
