I turned on slow query log just for funsies and was immediately humbled.
Looks like I've got my next sprint lined up.3 -
2010: having so many toolbars intalled in the browser you can barely see the actual webpage.
2024: having so many banners and popups in the webpage you can barely see the actual webpage.7 -
Site usage has dropped off a cliff since this started, I'm seeing comments every other day about something else breaking, or which devRant alternatives is best. Seen as I'm never going to have enough ++ I've had to resort to inspecting the avatar builder and fiddling around with the image source to add all the stuff I want.
Also, why is there no tabby coloured cat option?16 -
I want to pass along some unsolicited advice to junior developers either because I grew through it, or I've had to deal with developers who behaved poorly.
Your ego will hurt you FAR more than your junior coding skills. Nobody expects you to be the best early in your career, so don't act like you are.
Working independently is a must. It's okay to ask questions, but ask sparingly.
Working code != good code. You are an author. Write your code so that it can be read. Accept criticism that may seem trivial such as renaming a variable or method. If someone is suggesting it, it's because they didn't know what it did without further investigation.
These are just a few quick tips from my experience. Others may chime in with theirs, and some may dispute mine. I wish you all fruitful careers!7 -
In my last rant, I complained about our rebranding document that was very much lacking... Their listed colours are slightly different than the colours used in their logo...
How do they fuck up copy pasting the colour values. And yes, it was meant to be the same.1 -
There's a package from GitHub I want to use in my filament project, but it is badly maintained and not compatible anymore.
I would like to upgrade it myself, but how do I do this? Do I have to create a fork?
What is the recommendation on this situation?9 -
As a team lead, what would you do if one of your direct reports sent obscenely bad code for review? Like absolutely nonsensical, non-working, touching wrong parts of the project, doing wrong things… Terrible even by your company's standards.
Would you consider it an instance of stupidity? Tiredness? A resignation letter? An insult? A cry for help? A combination of those things?10 -
This week I'm doing construction work -- renovating my balcony. Just now I've finished with HTML - hanging drywall ceiling. Tomorrow will start on CSS - putty.
Damn, it's so gooood no not think about computers!6 -
How is the weekend going?
I have a colleague's wedding coming up this weekend. What would you suggest as a marriage gift?

My cat's brain is powerful enough to calculate and apply the exact physics of a long jump, with ballistics, flight aerodynamics, dynamic weight distribution using tail as stabilizer, all of that, and land a jump every time without failure.
Yet, it's not powerful enough to realize that can just walk straight through a slightly opened door using her body as a wedge. Or, she can just, you know, push the door open with her paw. When presented with an everyday task that involves physics, she acts like she's nothing but an ethereal ghost and fails miserably.
This makes me think that her jump computer is a very old hardwired part inherited from frogs, honed by evolution and compiled into wetware millions of years ago. Like an ancient analog computer that works flawlessly every time. She has no conscious access to its inner workings. She can use it, sure, but she doesn't understand it.
I wonder how many such parts do us humans posses.17 -
Finally got the opportunity to work as fullstack more oriented to backend as a side gig and I fucking love it.
Now I can say with all my heart that I hate my main frontend job and designers so much. I hate every small task like:
- change this arrow
- change this button
- change this color
- well this is not accessible.
- well this doesn't pass contrast check ( as if this is my fucking job and not the stupid fuck designer who mixes up colors )
Now I'm just trying to consider a reconversion and git gud .1 -
so on my new lappy I'm testing XFS. After reading how bloody fast it is, I figured: why not give it a shot!
2 weeks later, I want to go back to ext4. XFS is SSSSOOOOOO fault-intollerant, it breaks my Chrome profile after each forced-poweroff (or power loss). And the on-boot fsck freezes. And after a successful bootup I see the log messages in syslog are all messed up (timestamps are all over the timeline!!!)
it's a mess... A very fast mess.17 -
I genuinely don't know what I am doing here. I have no form of social media so I started using my school laptop and found out this site isn't blocked so here I am reading random ass dev's yapping and ranting. Honestly love it lmfao.4

Hey lads and gals!
A genuine question to people who live in "heaven-on-earth" countries (Greece islands, Italy, Spain seaside, Portugal, etc.). Where do YOU travel to to chill, change scenery and relax?
I mean, for us, wildlings of the North, going South on vacation is a no-brainer. Like now, I'm getting my sanity back while sipping Rakia (IDK why not ouzo though..) in Crete. But where do Cret(ians?) and other Southerners go on vacation?6 -
I wonder how many bitflips did they trigger last night...
Looks pretty. But much too scarry when you understand what it is.3 -

"If you want your software to be adopted by Americans, good tests scores from the CI server are very important. Volkswagen uses a defeat device to detect when it's being tested in a CI server and will automatically reduce errors to an acceptable level for the tests to pass. This will allow you to spend less time worrying about testing and more time enjoying the good life as a trustful software developer."rant malice driven development devops task failed successfully volkswagen emissions continuous integration satire gone wrong troll9 -

Praying to every deity, I begged to spare me, to never kill my inner child. To never make me grow up into materialistic mindset that punishes curiosity and denies miracles.
It seems like my wish was granted. Am I naive? Sure. Do I have kid ego? Sometimes.
But I never wanted to be someone else.3 -
My office computer ran out of hard drive space so I asked for an upgrade.
Instead they gave me a brand new computer with awesome specs and a mid-top tier graphics card, so now all I want to do is play games.
Productivity may drop...2 -
Got an error trying to [Leave] a meeting in Teams
*sigh....*
Just Teams being Teams...
Now I'm probably stuck in that meeting somewhere deep in MS's servers forever.4
