As the only dev in this company, I have to try to cooperate with colleagues across silos, which has proven difficult - albeit being close. Have worked with remote teams with great success.

I have tried lots of ways. My best is sharing a room with a coworker I get along with. I've worked successfully with people in different parts of the world as well as unsuccessfully with people close by. It's other factors that is important. Usually office politics and if people are morons or not.
