Finally selling my gtx 1070 and going to swap to AMD, just wanting to know if anyone has heard anything about the RX 590 finally playing nice with linux?

Heard it was causing a lot of issues, just don't want to buy it and have more problems than I am with NVIDIA at the moment!

😂 My laptop had a FirePro, and nothing worked. Neither on Windows, nor on Linux. Eventually I swapped it with a Quadro, and never looked back. Everything just works.

Since then AMD has done a lot. But still I'd be aware that the newest of the new will most probably not work on Linux from day 0.
Vendors always deliver for Windows first.

Which linux did you use? We just got a new laptop for a project. It took a while but ubuntu 16.04 is now running with the gtx 1070. Most issues were so far caused by raid and secure boot being enabled in the bios.

@hasu using elementary OS, tbh it's not actually the drivers themself but it's just there delivery and performance...

Like if I install the suggested driver (390) I get screen tearing and my displays will swap orientation every boot, if I install the latest it will send my system into shock and then just leave me in a constant login screen loop, had similar issues with arch a while ago

@M1sf3t I can 100% see how you got that haha

@lxmcf i had the login loop aswell and it was caused by the secure boot being enabled and something with uefi. Disabled it and it works like a charm.
The orientation swapping is new. Never seen that happenen.
Intel might be at fault too. Installed 18.04 on an oldish laptop with intel on board graphics and boy was it painful to fix. No monitors got recognized, artifects all over... some settings in grub did the trick there.

IIRC someone here said it had problems on linux.

Also I've watched teardown of it, and it's not really the best design out there.

I would still recommend you to wait for next gen tough, especially when taking your current gpu into account.

@hasu hmmmm, I'll try hunting down the last release that was subunit 16 and I'll see if any of the issues disappear

If you have problems with nvidia cards on linux, these two wikis should be of great help. Well, as long as you can transition the information to your chosen distribution.

    https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NVidia

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.ph...

(They have also great pages on AMD.)

The key to something that complex is the background knowledge, and to know what you want to do. Discrete setup? Optimus setup, native or via Bumblebee?
