im really tired of people who just happen to have been around for 10+ years being put into management roles despite not knowing how to manage, especially for software projects. really feel like im in the wrong field even though i love programming and am good at what i do. past few jobs have been similar in poor management, unclear roadmaps, etc., but this is the first time ive been directly insulted by someone above me. the pay isnt even that great here. i could just leave but why bother if every other company is pretty much the same

Agreed. Management means entirely different tasks and skills and can require lots of (re-)training. E.g. while you can kind of get by as a dev with a too large ego, as a manager you fail at your job without even trying.
Sadly, management is still commonly seen as "up" on the career ladder and thus desirable.

The good news is: Not every company is the same! Don't let anybody tell you that. Especially your bosses just want you to stay and suck it up when they say that.

@VaderNT you are right! I will keep trying with hope in my heart.

Everyone will eventually raise to the most incompetent post they can hold.
Good developer is pushed to “manage” team. These are 2 skills sets completely different. (It’s an example)
