Psuedo rant/suggestion:

Too long? DON'T FUCKING READ IT DIPSHIT

Yello there ya fucks!

Since we're facing a real community issue here with the slow phasing out of the primal nude and aggressive developers and the entry/takeover by 9 year old kids who claim to be developers cause they can relate to some random meme. (CHROME TAKES TOO MUCH RAM, GOOGLE IS GONNA RAPE ALL OF US, WINDOWS IS SHIT, WINDOWS IS DA BEST) memes I'm looking at you.

I propose we come with an open balls high passive aggressive competition to recommend "free" suggestions to this platform.

My very intellect deprived free suggestion :

1. We're here to rant, so by default classify all posts as fucking dried up 10 year old yellow cum sauce that's stuck to your leg cause you didn't pay your electricity bill in your mom's basement and couldn't see where you let your jizz out jokes.

(TL;DR EVERYTHING IS A JOKE, YES YOUR LIFE INCLUDED UNLESS:)

Basically, ignore any crap that has
A. Pictures
B. Less than 69 cuss words *giggles, sorry* (number is subject to change)
C. LESS THAN 100 CAPITAL LETTERS.

The others may enter the rant territory.

RANKS MAY BE PROVIDED TO SUPPORTERS AND RANTERS BASED ON THEIR LANGUAGE.
(yeah I'm not kiddin but I'd be surprised af if this actually happened) #intellectdeprivedshizzadvice
#fuckhashtagsandmyselfplease

YOU MAY LEAVE FURTHER SUGGESTIONS WITH A #DRCHANGE Tag (another fucking hash tag God fucking damn it)

DICKS OUT EVERYONE, LET'S MAKE IT OR BREAK IT. WE'RE DEVELOPERS HERE NOT PALE BALLED FAGGOTS. LADIES I'M LOOKING AT YOU! (jk)

(*not implying anything offensive to faggots, well that works doesn't it? I can call someone a bitch and say no offense. So I guess I'll say it too "no offense?") [I have a feeling imma regret this very much]

That aside, should I apologize for the weird ass fucked up language I used? NO fuck you little cunty dipshits who find this offensive.
People like you are the reason cyber bullying fucking exists, God! Actually no cause I'm fucking agnostic. I pray to black holes. Yes. So black hole! *cough* sorry

{I'm a little sleepy headed so excuse me inadequate expression skills and my vocabulary, I shall sleep for 2 days now. I'm prolly gonna wake up and create a new account without thinking much, this is basically account suicide what I did here. Well if it works hurray?}

I'll read it to the end in a sec, but I just want to say that you can't have any proper discussion here anymore either, the same 9 year olds will spam this to hell - I tried a week or so ago lol

Edit: also suggestions in general are useless, the platform owners are MIA and have learned the same trick many of us do: hide the app and forget about it existing to begin with.
  • 1
@JoshBent ha I know but well I couldn't help but entertain myself while typing this. Suggestion was only secondary xD
  • 1
@TheAnimatrix to be honest, that was disappointing, thought it was constructive suggestions, oh well
  • 0
@JoshBent yeah don't expect much, I just hope others can do better.
It's a nice problem to solve actually. Classifying the emotion of some text. Yeah it's been done before but I guess I could give it a shot.
  • 0
@irene the memers want to get in everywhere, I don't think any additional space could prevent this. It'll only make it harder for the genuine new entries to figure out the system.
  • 0
@irene well prolly when the community was beautiful and everything, now it's just reddit a reddit sub. Rules don't apply anymore.
  • 0
@irene agree with the memes there but I'm just arguing for the better classification of anger among rants. It's not really a rant if there's no emotion shared.
Well imo I see the same memes everywhere so I couldn't care less for them.
  • 0
@JoshBent sometime this week just for fun's sake I might consider opening up a new public repo for rant emotion classification. That'd be kinda constructive and fun. Ofc not just the repo imma try some quick approaches without using too many learning related accessories.
  • 0
@irene the "rant" classifier here doesn't show rants to me... I still get dumb ass jokes that aren't rants... Actually most of them. It works on tags so if someone tagged something wrong it's not going to verify?
  • 0
@Haxk20 totally, so many amazing ranters left. I even looked up to this one guy who went by the username "Letmecode" or something like that. I'm not sure if this was why he left, but a lot of other people did for this reason and I'm not happy bout it.
  • 1
@TheAnimatrix sure beat yourself to anything you want
  • 2
Censorship is bad by definition. Any platform that thrives on people evolves naturally and it’s not always goes the way you want it to go.

Keeping up with your aggressive mood, I’m gonna suggest you to deal with it or gtfo.
  • 2
The issue isn't just the memes. Much more, it's the dumbnuts they attract. devRant is lacking any serious correction mechanism because the only way morons can learn is through pain. The downvotes don't work once there are enough idiots to upvote any shit.
  • 2
Wants to make devrant great again.
Wants us to use # in the tags.

What the fuck are you doing?!
  • 1
@Gregozor2121 I did beat myself about it if that helps.
  • 0
@uyouthe the happy aggressive mood was a reference to some of the old ranters here. I did a crappy job at it, Though worry not I had my fair share of smiles when making it.
  • 2
@Fast-Nop hey you forgot the "please up vote my stuff cause I need the stress bal in my blood to live" rants
  • 3
@TheAnimatrix Yeah I always give these shitheads a downvote because of spamming. But there are enough wankers here who upvote even that crap.

Also, deleting such shit wouldn't be censorship, but noise cancellation. Ideally with a posting ban of 12 - 24 hours.
  • 1
@uyouthe aren't you the same bag of shit that never tags properly to begin with? lol how about you get the fuck out?

@M1sf3t I've suggested the downvote option both on the github tracker and a year or more ago to dfox, you guys are just wasting your time you could be doing anything else, everything is being rehashed and has no use, especially because there's only one dev that has access to the code and production.
  • 3
@uyouthe No. Censorship isn't bad "by definition", unless you're referring to your personal definition.

Slander, libel, child porn, hate speech amongst others is censored by most "modern" societies.

Yes, I'm being pedantic. Because it irks me when people make silly sweeping statements.

To OPs point, it's certainly true that there hasn't been any kind of active moderation to shape the community. So this is one result of what happens when you leave voting communities alone for too long. The place gets overrun by validation seekers like the meme posters.
  • 0
    @codebanana time will tell
  • 1
    @uyouthe time HAS already told.

@JoshBent indeed, @uyouthe is exactly one of the shitheads whose "rants" should mostly be deleted along with a posting ban until he gets the use of categories. No wonder that he is against noise cancellation.
  • 0
@Fast-Nop Did I understood your message correctly?

I mean you insist on "categorical purity" while violating this community's code of conduct (https://devrant.com/rules) at the same time by insulting me.

Can you see any contradictions here?

Also look at my rating. If you don't like what I post that's no problem. But this community seems to like it so...
  • 1
@uyouthe it contains "if a large number of people are blocking you" too, yet we aren't able to literally put you into an echo chamber to suffocate in your own shit :)
  • 2
@uyouthe The code of conduct was meant to work without idiots flooding DR. You stupid shithead break the DR rules with 80% of your "rants" and then refer to the rules.

Also, calling you a stupid shithead is no insult, it's merely a factual description.
  • 0
@irene I definitely don't fault him for that, we all just uninstalled or have thrown it deep into the app drawer, there's too much to fix to be worth the pain and hassle.

I'd even go one step further and sell it to the lowest bidder, to get the cash on the way out and have somebody else deal with that shit from now on.
  • 0
@Fast-Nop oh, I can see it's personal now so we're just wasting time. What you just did is nothing but contributing to the image of devrant-nazi. Congratulations
  • 1
@uyouthe yeah GTFO if you are too stupid to even grasp what categories are. Idiot.
  • 1
@JoshBent I'd rather take the highest bidder. ;-)

But one lesson learnt is that shit degrades without moderation because being open to everyone implies being open to every moron, which are exactly the sort of people in RL who are at cause for the actual rants.
  • 2
I definitely can feel you old devranters anger. I misused the categories and I admit it. I'll do my best to set them properly next time. I often just forget about them tbh. I'm sorry.

I mean you was there from the day one or something, you was the people who shaped this community and now there's some newbies who trashing the community you're emotionally attached to. I get it.

Aside of that, can changing the default category to 'random' help?
  • 0
@norman70688 we actually can, that's exactly what all of the user base did that existed before -

we left you to shit where you eat and moved on.
  • 0
It's either closed, restricted and thus perfect community for a small group of people who know each other or an open community for everyone but it's chaotic and it's not always the way you like it.

    Everything else is half measures
  • 0
@uyouthe I rarely get to say it, but props for not continuing to sit in your own shit.

Yes, random for example allows to filter casual non dev related rants out, that most come to read, or rather came to read here sometime.

Read my comment I've posted just now too, most of us lost the attachment - including the lead/solo developer of this platform.

It's when some dip takes pride in shitting up the platform or being a decency lacking piece of shit, that it pisses people off properly and for a good reason.
  • 0
@uyouthe Moderation would help. Even you would certainly learn if half of your rants were just deleted and got you a posting ban of 12-24 hours. The reason why you don't learn now is that your shit doesn't have consequences.
  • 1
@uyouthe actually there is ways to avoid what happened to devrant, just devrant is beyond the point of recovery or worth the amount of time needed to invest, especially with what slack has established itself as the new wave of users, that would not suddenly understand these changes.
  • 0
But what you guys do is being unwise and just demonstrating plain anger which is not constructive.

If I was the one to be unhappy about where this community is headed, I'd go and created my own from scratch, invite-only.
  • 0
@norman70688 I'm unable to guess that from just that piece, but guess that switches the blame to him for the original.
  • 1
@uyouthe that's pretty much exactly what has been happening in the background, just not giving it much attention, because of the mass of useless people that would "join" or later participate with their own fucked ideologies, just to stomp the projects progress and leave.
  • 0
@JoshBent so you guys created a hidden community? So why do you even need devrant if it's so full of shit and so beyond the point of no-return?
  • 1
@uyouthe devrant has shown there is a place, need and what to avoid, basically the post radiation meltdown, like many forums and IRCs before its time.
  • 2
@uyouthe as I mentioned, I think I am the only survivor amongst the all that still comes here, but even I dried out beyond just giving dips that lack any manners a kick in the ribs.
  • 1
@uyouthe and there isn't just yet a full replacement, more like scattered groups of people messaging in smaller circles, the "replacement" isn't even in any competition to devrant itself, because that would only cause the same issues devrant went through.
  • 0
@JoshBent you probably feel like steve jobs kicked from his own company or something

Again, why not to crowdfund a new invite-only community? I bet old devranters will support it. You just need to announce it properly so it could come alive from the day one
  • 1
@uyouthe I do go through the regular steps usually whenever a community I frequented on gets replaced or dies:

    1. complain, suggest, offer help

    2. try to improve, by e.g. filling functional gaps

2.1 I was creating a lot of scripts for devrant to fill the missing functions like a simple notification filter that was very much needed or preventing awkward implementations like accidentally clicking outisde the comment window wiping your comment, I did it all, before dfox or trogus even remotely attempted to

    3. understand that everybody moved and doesn't care about it

    4. leave and try to find a new place to stay

But that's just my mental way of stop giving a shit.
  • 1
@JoshBent I'd also think about kicking out students. Mimimi my prof gave me one grade less than I think I had earned. Mimimi the exams are hard so that I can't pass them without work. There's no real money involved so that nothing is at stake.

And also kicking those among the depressed members who don't get that devRant isn't a therapy place and pester the rant feed with depression shit.
  • 1
@JoshBent yep I've seen your github and it tells that you've invested much of your time into devrant.

I don't like measures like moderation, read-only and other stuff like this because it always created to fit it's originators perfectly and for others to fit in.

It's just like a corrupt president rewriting the state constitution to be re-elected forever (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...).

I mean you kind of created this community and you know how everyone should behave and you create the rules according to yourself. That's how it happens every time.
  • 1
@Fast-Nop there's a better way to keep all the people in the community, while separating them.

I just don't want to disclose the details too much, just for somebody to hard spam devrant clones before a proper and well thought through more open alternative, that isn't a devrant clone, is published.
  • 1
@uyouthe I am a heavy advocate of free speech, yet I came to the conclusion after my lifetime until now, that imposed limitations make the most beautiful of things, both creatively and community wise, for creative see how minecraft spawned with limitations, yet had the most creative artworks done in it, limits are not always a bad thing and can make a community grow healthily, even with any amount of "strangers" joining.
  • 0
@uyouthe as I mentioned also in the previous comment, there is ways to keep all the dirt that came to devrant, while yet keeping them all (incl. the more "elitist") happy and only limited by e.g. laws and base ground.
  • 1
    @JoshBent just remember 2b2t.

Also I can see that this whole thing unfolds into classical "freedom vs safety" dilemma where I always pick freedom.
  • 0
@uyouthe you're "free" as in "freedom" to leave said platform or decide not to join it, the imposed base rules have to be there, even though the before mentioned way would keep people within the community, but with more alike people, choosing what content they want.
  • 1
    @JoshBent also true but meh
  • 0
@uyouthe you see the point, that's all that was needed really.
  • 0
@irene dfox abandoned the project???? Excuse me what???
  • 0
@JoshBent damn you put that much work into it, lol I guess I am being quite ambitious by trying to implement a rant classifier.
  • 0
Honestly had no idea, that a lot of energy and time was already wasted trying to make this (abandoned?) project better. Had no clue about what happened tbh.

I guess I'm more dissapointed now, nothing can be done? Pains to hear that.
  • 0
Yeah it's reasonable when @dfox just has other priorities than this project. What I don't understand is why devs in such a situation opt to keep the source closed and let the project rot. It's not as if others wouldn't participate if allowed.

E.g. account based killfiles would be an obvious improvement.
  • 1
@Fast-Nop account based kill files? Care to elaborate? Sounds interesting.
  • 1
@TheAnimatrix So that you can choose which users to ignore - not stored in cookies, but server-side so that it works also when clearing cookies in the browser.

Rants and comments by ignored users then would be filtered away and not trigger notifications.

Also, an ignored user adressing you by clicking reply can get a dialogue box saying "this user does not read your comments".
  • 1
@TheAnimatrix he replied 30 minutes ago, maybe not all hope is lost? not sure.
  • 0
@Fast-Nop there should be no popup if you're ignored.
  • 0
@JoshBent There should because it lets you know that no reply can be expected.

Addressing someone who doesn't read you won't make much sense, but how will you know that without popup?
  • 0
@Fast-Nop you're making it over philosophical, if you're blocked, you should just think they are ignoring you, not give you a reason to run your mouth and harass them in your echo chamber.
  • 0
@JoshBent Of course people will ignore you if they block you. But how do you find out that you're blocked in the first place?
  • 0
@Fast-Nop you won't, you'll drop tagging them in the future, that's the point.
  • 0
@irene hmm that's unfortunate but he does appear to be using the app tho.
