Knowing how to write doesn't make you a writer. Knowing how to program doesn't make you a programmer.

While this is true (you have to actually do them to qualify - although quantity is not specified particularly well) the quality aspect (are you good at it) isn't specified at all.

@powerfulparadox that's the point. A lot of people can write but few are good enough to be legit writers. Similarly a lot of folks can program but few can do it well enough to be called programmers.

"Knowing how to program doesn't make you a programmer"

Unfortunately, barely knowing how to program is still sometimes good enough to land you a job as one.

@M1sf3t if you get rejected do ask them why (very politely, in an I-want-to-improve-myself tone). Sometimes they tell you and it helps you fill in the gaps in your profile. Much better that you know what employers actually consider useful instead of wasting time doing stuff that doesn't matter for getting a job.

Lets see, what then does it take to be a writer or programmer?

Personally I have been paid for both. For writing I did website writing for a corporate site. Does getting paid do the trick?
