    Why not elementary OS?

Good suggestion, I forgot about elementary. Use Ubuntu on my servers so just went with that. Ill check it out.

@Artemix isn't Ubuntu a Debian distro? But I have to agree with you Ubuntu isn't the best choice but it's a good start.

Anybody tried the new Ultimate-Edition? If you got time, go fx with it. Ultimate-edition.Info

Yeah, you can always switch to Fedora, Manjaro or Antergos if you feel comfortable with Linux and start to hate outdated packages πŸ˜‰

Custom Ubuntu distro packed with powerful tools and an over-the-top gui. Fun to play with. Comes with any kind of tool most would need. @Artemix

... Okay haha. I don't have time to play with it new OSs right now. So I was hoping someone would. I used to mess with it a few years ago. @Artemix

All good suggestions. This macbook is a spare machine so it will allow me to test out a few different distros.

Ask 10 Linux users which distro to install and you'll get at least 20 answers.

For such a small portion of the desktop market, think about how there's (supposedly.. bc there is no tracking!) close to 1000 variants.

Be prepared for this topic as you enter the new arena! You have the outside battles, Windows vs Linux, MacOS vs Linux, etc. along with the family feuds like this one 😎

And don't ever bring up text editors. A topic more off limits than any other for it's potential to start dev wars! Hah jk stick with Vim and you'll be fine. πŸ˜‹

@Artemix what debian do you go with? Last time I tried I was on stable, God the packages were old :( What is heavy and unstable with Ubuntu since 14.04? Beside unity, but it's easy to ditch.
  • 2
I think Fedora is the best mix of everything. Not too heavy, supported by an enterprise organization (kind of) and has the bleeding edge software. It's gonna help you in job sectors as well considering most of the servers run centos or redhat enterprise.

I have a CentOS, a lubuntu server and an ubuntu server of my own and manage 4 ubuntu servers for my company. Never noticed anything like that

How did you actually install ubuntu? I use Parallels VM but didn't know it's easy to dual boot Ubuntu on Macbooks.
  • 0
I installed Ubuntu as the main OS there is no OSX on it anymore. No dual booting on this.

    @cain I recommend you to try https://distrochooser.de/?l=2

It's really helpful for getting a hint in the right direction!

@toXel Bravo! An answer to a question with a proper response not five questions about who, what, when, where.. to answer one of the other posts re macOS vs Ubuntu: it depends. Is it irreversible? Let the bird fly from the nest πŸ€—

Maybe they return maybe they don't. Ok bad analogy but it's all I have with one cup of coffee to support it. πŸ˜‘

@toXel holy crap I didn't even see what the link was. I assumed it was a Mac refugee blog.

That site will replace your morning news and will be the reason you'll travel around 5 other distros like a buffet! For advice on dual booting this guy I believe wrote a lot of the EFI boot stuff and is someone good to know. http://rodsbooks.com/linux-uefi/ and for a more formal walkthrough maybe read the page on the Arch wiki. Bookmark wiki.archlinux.org.

..ok I take it back, just pulled it up and this is the Bible on installing Linux on a MacBook Pro. Way more than I got for my Asus lol. I bet if you see the history in the wiki you'll notice some very passionate people that care about getting you the right information. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.ph...

@stable-penguin What... exactly is your point? O.o
  • 0
@toXel +1 for a great recommendation, and here are two more for specific areas to be familiar with. It was... A compliment 0.o
  • 0
@stable-penguin Yea I got that compliment. Thanks for that :D

I don't get the part with the Mac refugees blog though... How is that related to my comment? :D
  • 0
@toXel I didn't look at the site you were recommending. I assumed and I was wrong. I figured it was a link on specifically how to accomplish this on his native platform, stuff to watch out for etc. Sorry if I offended you somehow. Just trying to help the guy out

Edit: to clarify I made that blog name up.. refugee leaving macOS.. obviously not funny. Sorry for that.

@stable-penguin Aahh now I got it! No offense happenedπŸ˜‰

@gnaaah elementary has never quite worked for me, I don't really get all the hype around it, in the Linux world nothing just works as well as ubuntu does
  • 0
@Artemix Hmm, I've been using elementary for a few years now and still as fast as ever. Too bad not everyone has that experience!

    LMDE
    Linux Mint Debian Edition

    Best Desktop OS.
  • 0
@gnaaah +1 for Antergos. Very stable and up to date Arch distro. Easy to install and flexible in desktop environments.
  • 1
    Did you try Arch Linux
  • 2
@meain not sure if I've ever met anyone that started with Arch. Don't get me wrong - all of mine are Arch and I love it.

I think the unofficial Linux desktop motto should be: "You'll come for Ubuntu. You'll stay for Arch." πŸ˜‡

@stable-penguin I have all my systems with Arch. But on my macbook it really seems to mess up.
  • 0
    did you install deepin?

@J4s0n canonical's ubuntu packages and tailored desktop make a pretty heavy distro
