Atom please!

Why does it have to be so slow? It's so pretty though. Mesmerizing even and I can never go back to sublime now.
The lag and crashes is killing me slowly, like a hot girlfriend that is somewhat crazy..

Too many plugins?

How many plugins do you have?

Atom launches in sub 1s and the only time it is slow is when tabbing into it while in a git repository (doesn't capture focus for about 600ms, weird bug, has been reported)

I have 86 packages of which 9 are community packages I've installed

It always freeze for 3-5 seconds upon the first edit and save of a file if it has git integrated.
Besides this and boot time, she threats me well

@pjheden atom seams to be having some trouble with git (quite ironic)

Seriously, am I the only one who works with a very quick Atom? (as side editor)

@linuxxx quite snappy for me (i have a $3000 pc tho, selfbuilt)

@Dacexi My computer is old and I have a hard disk running at 7200rpm. I only expect it to be quick in comparison

The biggest issue I have with Atom is it crashing when opening a file with a long line - solved if you enable auto wrap in preferences :D

As a vim user I feel the stereotypical need to just drop by and say with no apparent reason that I use vim.

VS Code is a better alternative as its also based on electron(same league as Atom)
Its fast (even with git), and got loads of plugins

@gedankennebel @George1 @fluffy43 I've downloaded both bracket and Vs Code now. Going to set the theme and all the settings right, and then give then a honest try

@pjheden I was a heavy sublime user at first, I then tried atom (which was very clunky!) Before I tried VS Code and stuck with it

I switched to Atom from Sublime and only have one regret.

Why do I need to press shift to scroll through tabs :(

There are some themes for sublime that look like atom

I almost fell for Atom too, only to realise that if I do, there'll be no going back to Sublime, and my life will be he'll with it crashing so frequently.

Sublime does the job nicely for me, but I prefer things light and easy as my laptop struggles a bit.

Sublime has amazing themes, I switched from Atom and Brackets to Sublime and never looked back. I don't think any of those new web based editors stack up to (native built) Sublime, performance-wise.

I want to love Atom, but then multicursor editing just completely murders performance and I'm out. Meanwhile Sublime doesn't give a shit how many plugins are loaded or what you do... always blazing fast.

In the end Sublime seems like the perfect middleground of closed optimization with open customization.

@thecritic honestly, themes on Atom and Brackets are exactly the same fidelity as Sublime. Of course they are slightly different so you might have an uncanny valley problem if you try to match them.

It's just that sublime is leagues ahead in speed. Web-tech apps just aren't able to compete with native yet in human-perceptible speed.

@divil do you edit large files often? For instance with multicursor or a linter plugin?

@divil everybody applies their own context. Also I might be easily annoyed by lag while you might not care (that's probably a good character trait)

@divil i believe they fixed loading large files in v 1.15

....I never thought to try Atom while not in a git repo. That's the only annoying thing when opening files, is that it lags a little.🤔
