Bloody ColdFusion. I hate it so much. Not only is it an inferior language. Also, every update breaks something. Adobe should have sticked with developing graphics packages like Photoshop and Illustrator, because they really suck at everything else.2

Have you ever been pair coding with someone who uses shotgun debugging? I am about to claw my eyes out! What is shotgun debugging you ask?
Code doesn't work... What do we do?
I start thinking about possible flow, how to go back to what works, where to insert debugging statements. My partner interrupts my thought and says - what if we change this variable name?
...uh what?
What if that fixes it
It won't!
Well how do you know if you don't try?
I change the variable name - of course nothing works and now I forgot the possible solution I was thinking about...
Starting over... I again start coming close to the idea... Interrupts me again. What if we comment out this random line?
Why what's your reasoning?
Answer: *Shrug* idk might work...
...rinse and repeat
WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???!
I literally started muting my computer sound so I can not hear him while I think and that helps tremendously. This is programming not magic, people!!! Stop throwing random "what if" suggestions!14 -
It's amazing how companies like Autodesk and Adobe see Linux as some "toy". When we talk about Linux we are talking about a professional workstation. My entire company uses Linux (currently Fedora 39) on its workstations, and all of our servers use FreeBSD. Not because it's free, but because it proves to be better than the alternatives to what we produce. We pay for licenses for JetBrains, BricsCAD, MATLAB and I still happily pay STEAM to play my Civilization, Doom Eternal, CS2 and I use Proton to continue my adventures in Diablo and Star Craft, all PAID. Adobe and Autodesk, be ashamed and instead of talking about market share, admit that you do not have competence.8

so which company is the new faang among developers? you know, the one where there is a good WLB, nice pay , 5-7 hr work/day and other benefits , but with a high entry barrier?
I am thinking of starting to revise DS/Algo for some interview prep2 -
Is it just me?
Feels like when you’re working in an agency, all that is heard is “this person doesn’t know what they’re doing” if you bring up problems and issues, especially proactively.4 -
Is it just me, or does it seem like worse languages get more usage than better ones? Like, how many people know Haskell vs. Python? A lot of people dislike JavaScript, but why is it so damn popular then? And why didn't presumably superior Dart replaced it on the web, even with Google's support and lobbying?
I think the reason is that every language has vocal critics, and when a lot of people use a language, there will be a lot of such critics. When a certain critical mass (no pun intended) is accumulated, it begins to look like everything you can read online is bad things. Of course, the language being worse than some other hip language doesn't help.
What do you think?1 -
If someone is paying you to write software you can be a software developer. If you are in school or learning on your own, then you are just a software developer in training. If you have been writing software for years and are starting to hate writing software, then you need therapy. BUT YOU WILL FOREVER BE A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER! ;-)3

I have to convert a very complex algorithm form matlab to C , and push to prod in next 7 days 😭
[FYI can’t use matlab to c coverter]6 -
I graduated with a CS degree which focused 99% on software only. In my current job, I get to write software to control hardware (pumps, valve’s, etc). I think this is awesome and I really enjoy interacting with the hardware. It makes the software seem more tangible.
I’d like to stay in positions that allow me to write software and interact with hardware but I’m having a hard time finding jobs that aren’t just a PLC programmer.
Do any of you guys have a job like this?4 -
The end is near.
I threw together a devRant content saver just now. It's rough, but it works:

save your rants and pics until it's too late.12 -
has anyone developed a math formula for GitHub repositories using the stars, the issues open and the amount of PRs to judge how strong the project is?3

Last week a user couldn't find a document in sharepoint. Typed (what he thought) was the exact file name in the search -> no results.
I know how to get 'under the hood', so I looked where I thought the file was, found it, and it was exactly as he searched for it. What the hell? Wasn't a new file, it wasn't moved/renamed, no reason why it couldn't be found.
I 'touched' the file. Waited 5 minutes and searched again, found it. What the frack Microsoft!14 -
There's a senior dev at work who deflects and delays every project while working on his own freelance jobs most of the day. Fortunately, my performance is not tied to his.
Hero, or villain?7 -
Hey. Can you add excel97 vba capabilities to new office 365 ? I have a 20years old xls file with very complicated macros that i need to run.
And btw, how come a software looses capabilities over time.9 -
A man dies, but how did everyone know he was sick? They saw his coffin.
Ted passes gas in a meeting. Manager: You have gone to far Ted!
I have named my oven Michael Jackson. It takes far to long to pre-hee-heat!2 -
At work this 4X Founder ex-FAANG fractional CTO TEDx {insert_puffery} was brought in to say "It's not about code, it's about solving problems." What he's really saying is it's time for me to rip a fart in the middle of his webinar footage.4

Yes former technical person who is now a business person. Please, please advise me on my job with your decaying outdated skills. Yes, google for me. I didn't know how to do that. Ah wonderful yes, you recall this being "easy" which is why you quit the field. What a nice time this is.4

My university had its half-abandoned tenth floor reserved for fringe scientists. To deter onlookers from going there, the only elevator was locked out, reserved only for uni staff.
As long as you didn’t make drugs there, you were fine. It was dusty, smelled of mold and was full of old Soviet gear. Outdated, sure, but better than nothing.
If you were a student preoccupied with some fringe theory, it was a safe space for you.1 -
I just got the dna test.
I am the father. My daughter is now 3 weeks old.
No surprise there. I expected to be the father. I had no reason to distrust my wife. But, after all, I know my IT security.
The relationship I had with my daughter was transitive. I trusted my wife and my wife had my daughter, ergo I had a connection with my daughter. Or in clearer terms: from a => b and b => c follows a => c.
The problem I was thinking about: What if I will stop trusting my wife in the future. At some point in the future... Something might happen. And I would stand there and wonder how long it went on. Maybe a month? Or before my daughter's birth? Maybe more than 9 month before my daughter. Would I be able to hide it from my daughter or would she notice...
If anything ever happens now, I know it has nothing to do with my daughter...
That's the same reason why we use end2end encryption. Sure, we have to trust that the application provided is not manipulated. But we only have to trust today. If it lands on their severs, we have to trust until the end of eternity.
I don't need any trust right now. And I am fucking happy about it.4
