Our CTO has been told, this morning by management, that our development department is "too quiet" and that it's spoiling "the atmosphere" of the office space.
So we've ordered mechanical keyboards.21 -
"So what got you in to development and programming?"
Me: well. I needed something to new to help with my depression, stress and anger.
"Oh cool. Did it help?"
Me: yes... They're so much stronger now.4 -
Oh yeah. Hey guys. 2 things.
First off. Forgot to say. Officially got a job. Finally. So thank you for all the help/advice and patience with my depressive rants!!
I'm in a new chapter of my life now so thanks.
And secondly.
I FUCKING HATE MY JOB6 -
Fuck MatLab. Fuck Mathworks. Why the fuck do I still have this fucking piece of shit on my computer? Even its logo makes me want to puke.
You think JavaScript is bad? Try MatLab, JavaScript will look like a saint.
You are still virgin? Try MatLab, it will fuck you hard.
Give me one fucking engineer who has to use MatLab and love its nonsense, I dare you!31 -

The way we talk about our tools makes we wonder why we do programming in the first place.23 -

Basic math class for devvys
Lemme prove that 2 = 1
a = b
a^2 = ab
a^2 - b^2 = ab - b^2
(a + b) (a - b) = b (a - b)
a + b = b
b + b = b
2b = b
2 = 1

Email from a company I applied To:
"Hi... We will be in touch by the 7th of November"
Me:... It's December already. Maybe I missed it.
Second email: "Sorry! Typo. It's meant to say 7th of November. Refer to this instead"
Me: ...
THIRD email: "So sorry. Or mailing system is failing so disregard all those emails and refer to this one. Thank you."
Me: ... WHERE THE FUCK IS THE DATE!??6 -
I've been a lurker for a long time. However, I decided to make an account to let you guys know I use Arch. Thank you for your time.10

So I've had my "emergency meeting" with my manager about me leaving.
(Re https://devrant.com/rants/4896068 )
As some of you advised I prepared to try my best to stay exceptionally calm for this.
First my line manager just casually asked if I could stay. I politely explained "no. :)"
Then she said it's a catastrophe, they would be in a chaos, etc etc and then she personally assures I would have less bs meetings mid-sprints (one of the things I had requested a while back).
I responded that's kind but I also was far from what I should be earning.
Then she explained that suddenly now that I am leaving it would not be a problem to raise my salary as appropriate.
So I asked why could they not do this when I had brought this up a ton of times earlier and why I got peanuts as a raise in summer.
The response was that "they unfortunately could not get a higher budget authorised from higher up" and that " sadly that affected the whole team".
So I asked since when can they get this authorised and the response was "recently". Then she quickly switched back to the question whether I'd stay with higher salary and other earlier requests met.
I was pretty salty at this point so I just sarcastically said "unfortunately I've already signed".
She then switched back to "ok, ok, but we really need your help! you know it, the x project will be a nightmare to keep in one piece without me".
I literally just didn't respond so then she continued "ok so then can you then help us out for just a few hours a month for x/hour? please"
Now the thing is that this last offer actually would have been super compelling but given everything else I would not want to rejoin this environment. Thankfully I had to say anyways that my new contract doesn't allow that.
So then belive it or not, she asked me if I could ask my new employer to change the contract to permit me to still work a few hours a month for them.
What. the. fuck.
After this I was super done so just kept responsing a few words to everything and shortly after that we called the meeting. I feel dumb to have stayed here so long and am glad that my new contract doesn't allow working for others as maybe my stupid ass would have considered the offer on the spot.9 -
Dear Windows,
All I wanted was for you to live in harmony with my Arch install on my laptop. I appreciate both of you guys for different reasons. You guys did okay for for 2 weeks. Then, when I was using you, you blue screened quickly and rebooted.
On reboot, the BIOS couldn't boot. I reboot again, but instead of my normal GRUB menu, it just goes straight to you. I call for Arch, but only you responded.
I understand you are a bit possessive, but you really need to learn to play with others.
You are in time out until your brother is fixed. Now nobody is happy.10 -
Ok yeahhh it’s not me.
Just got told I didn’t pass an interview that lasted 15 minutes with him talking about the company and no questions for me.
My interviewers lately have just been unfortunate2 -
This morning my girlfriend told me about the network at her school constantly disconnecting, to which I jokingly replied "So, it doesn't deserve candy". She came back with "But it's already asking for so many cookies"...
-
Manager: I'm so sorry to say but your collegue A has passed away yesterday afternoon. There will obviously be flowers etc and we'll try to support her family as much as we can..
Me: Oh, no. My deepest condolences. (I'm always bad at saying much in situations like this, but)
B: My gosh! So does this mean A's family also caught it??!? (Corona)
Manager: She died in a car accident.
...
Also how unfortunate. Due to the lockdown, a ton of the people use the roads as a racing track around here...7 -
My neighbor brought me her smartphone because it was too slow. Not only it was an old model with low RAM, but it also wouldn't allow her to install more apps due to that shitty thing of having to install them in the phone storage.
Now you will be asking, what is abnormal about this that I'm writing it here? IT WAS FULL OF BIBLE APPS, JUST WHATSAPP, FACEBOOK AND BIBLES.5 -
Sometimes I give someone a ++ on here just to bother them with a notification on their phone. It gives me a sense of power.6
-
I love my girlfriend, but sometimes she doesn't get dev-work.
Last night, we had a fight over me sticking post-its to the wall in our home office. I find them helpful for keeping an overview of what I'm working on. She finds them ugly and decided to tear them all down without conferring with me. I got pissed. I almost always give in to her quirks and wants in every other aspect of how we live, so I feel like my desk space should at least be under my control. In my anger, I ordered her out of the room. She then proceeded to be sulking/angry with me up till and including this morning "because I overreacted".
Was I wrong? What should I have done differently?22 -
Example of really really bad UX. The site consists of more than 50% of the footer and at least 10% of the header.
Whoever designed this shit deserves a shoe deep in his ass.11 -
I just had my worst hackathon so far and need to puke my whole toxic hatred, the rant will be full of hate so be warned. (I just don't want to let it go on my girlfriend, but I need to shout it out loud somewhere)
First of all, it is alright to be a beginner at a hackathon. It is also alright to not know that much about coding and want to learn. But it is not alright to lie about your skill, pretend to be a senior programmer and waste my fucking time.
Don't even fucking dare to say your are "fit" in Android development if you just have done some foobar tutorial on YouTube, don't even bother to read the document and have literally non existent knowledge about computer science.
Why the fucking hell do you need to pretend to be a seasoned programmer if you are just a bloody beginner? I mean you are in a hackathon full of computer nerds so soon or later your impostor ass will be debunked so what is the point?
And the other guy. Why the fucking hell did.'t you say that you just begin Python for 3 months? You are not a fucking developer if you just started coding for 3 fucking months. Learn some fucking coding before starting with machine learning you fucking punk ass bitch script kiddie.
Alright, maybe I was too naive to not check my teammates' background before make a team with them. Fuck me and my fucking stupid ass. My dumb ass monkey brain fell for big mouths, I deserved the headache right now and none less.
Lesson learned!9 -
I managed to re-negotiate my offer to reach the (accidentally) advertised range exceeding my original (realistic) expectations and this is in huge part thanks to the helpful bunch of you here.
So: Thank you!!
And I can't belive that in a single fucking day I benefitted more from posting to devrant than all the time spent on toxic subreddits, calling useless recruiters, forums and others. Here, even those comments that I disagreed with were phrased in a reasonable manner and they also helped me formulate an apparently very strong argument in the compensation meeting.7 -
Seriously, look at this guy’s bloody phone. He’s not letting go of it, it’s been like this for ages. He’s got missing pieces of glass above the lcd, there are cracks all over, sellotape all over. At some point you gotta realise it’s affecting the user experience.
If you don’t want to get a new phone, at least have the screen replaced!!26 -
Ayy. Finally hit the 1000++ point. Now I can get the shirt that I literally have 5 of irl for my avatar2
-
Just received a job invitation for my first developer position. But I never wrote a line of code in my life. I guess my interviewer too.8
-
So, my last rant here was 3 years ago, and i just signed in again to devrant to post this fucking shit.
There is this guy who is a Project Manager in my office, I haven´t work with him but he sits in front of me and i have to listen to his bullshit almost every fucking day. Anyways, the other day he was talking to some other guy (a PM, also) and he said something like this:
"Programming is the most overrated thing ever, everyone can do it, you could do it, i could do it just googling stuff, i could even replace almost every programmer in this office, it´s the easiest thing ever. a programmer couldn´t do my job even if his life depended on it ´cause they can´t talk, they can´t manage people, they can´t manage their own time, heck they can´t even manage to talk to each other. they´re just a bunch of incels who think they´re important and their job is shit anyway".
They don´t see us as human begins, they see us as necessary evil.
(apologize if i wrote something wrong. English is not my first language)9 -
Fuck our new project manager.
Literally all she does in her time is schedule meetings for others and send us emails stating that X needs to be done by date or why are we delayed with Y. Then she even manages to completely screw us with the meetings she schedules.
Today I woke up to seeing a beautiful gapless column of colorful rectangles in my dairy.... for today. And last time I saw this Monday it only had 2.5 hours of meetings!!
Now a lot of us from our team had the Friday afternoon off so it may be that she did this beautiful piece of artwork during that time, in which case she could somewhat rightfully say that we should have taken a look at it. But we actually have a convention to only schedule planning meetings for Mondays which these fucking aren't and even if she hadn't known this, who the fuck schedules a ton of meetings to Monday?! from a Friday afternoon?!?!
By the way the new pretty pink and orange meetings I have today are about actually important topics in between which I would normally appreciate to grab a tea or at least use the fucking restroom. Officially I only have a 45 minute lunch break all day.
Oh and naturally she sets up the meetings as organiser so that we can only suggest her new times and can't change it on our own.
But naturally PM lady never actually attends the meetings because she wouldn't understand shit. So when my fav female colleague, Sammy and I joined our 11am meeting, the first thing Sammy said - well after I greeted her by "wtf" - is to just leave the call on while we grab brunch.
So here I am sitting in the close by park with my brunch and thought I could use the now extended lunch break time efficiently by ranting my ass of and asking you guys why the fuck such people like our PM get paid.5 -
Me after a long coding session with a well prepared working flow: I am such a great computer scientist, I can conquer the world.
Right after that I found a repository for computer science papers and got immidiately hooked. Well, the level of knowledge and theory is so immense that it brought me back to ground of reality again: I know so little that it is almost ridiculous, even if I read and code 16 hours a day I may never understand computer science as a whole.
Le me sad.11 -
There was an error in one of my Java file. Impossible to find it. I commented all the code and the error remain. I commented the import of that class and no more error. How the f**** is possible that a empty class give an error ?
I opened the file in another text editor and found out that the last character was a symbol that wasn't recognize or display in other text editor.
I was really proud (and confused)3 -
Could the deverloper of this app make the increment and decrement symbols on the right side so I can upvote/downvote posts with my right thumb?
#please?5 -
Software Devs are less supportive than the community tries to convey. They're also part of the most self-deluded and obnoxious crowd that exists on earth.
Someone saying they don't enjoy coding 24/7 outside of work? You actually enjoy totally different hobbies that have next to nothing to do with coding?
- Shitty developer, you should probably work elsewhere. Maybe flipping burgers.
"Coding in <Framework X> is SO friggin' easy. You're basically subhuman garbage if you can't learn it within a month!"
Watch some YouTube Videos with the "Freelancer Success Stories" of dudes that haven't - apparently coded, ever - and started to code late in life and tell you how perseverance and learning brings the success and yet you never see any repos of those guys. You see those guys mostly go on for up to half an hour to regurgitate some hot garbage you can read up within two minutes yourself from ANY coding blog.
You're not using a macbook to develop?
- "Oooof, man! How can you?"
You don't really like "Popular Framework X"?
- Especially when it comes to Frontend Frameworks prepare to either die on the hill of your beliefs or die a futile and slow death when people - more or less - snarkily try to dissect your opinion in order to try - again, more or less - to hide their own bias. Because don't forget, your opinion is OBJECTIVELY wrong and you simply happen to a garbage developer for (dis-)liking something.
You DO like "Popular Framework X"?
- Well, rinse and repeat basically.
You struggle to get a new job?
- All your fault. You clearly didn't spend enough time coding; you should have at least 12 Open-Source Projects with at least 100k downloads the week.
There is actually a whole lot more, but I feel I'm basically done with software dev. Software development is neither creative nor terribly fun. I'm just angry at myself that I switched careers for the money.20 -
interview today
me: and can you tell me a little bit more about your development process? e.g. an example dev cycle from reqs to testing and review...?
senior dev interviewing me:
*gives frustrated/annoyed "why tf are you asking these?" look*
So, uh, we don't really use testing for these projects cuz it would make it harder to refactor later.
(and responded nothing else on the topic)
I left shortly after that.9 -
Worst dev experience was when I was asked to "take a look at" a propriatery Windows app built by a now non-existent team at the company.
The code base resembled the quality of legacy code where about every hour I felt like I needed to vomit. But that wasn't even the worst part for me.
This was the first time I had to develop on Windows and was sent a separate dedicated laptop for this. Now I started to have a bad feeling about this because as far as I had known every single dev at the company used company Macs for development (including me for other projects). It turned out the Windows laptop was indeed configured for a non-dev team :)
Having liased with IT admins for a day I finally got my environment set up and hit install on the dependencies and in 10 minutes it got to less than 10%. The laptop was pretty powerful so I couldn't belive wtf was going on, fans were ramping. Checked task manager and the company Anti-Malware was hogging the whole CPU.
I was so mad that I managed to get the IT admins to completely disable it and then it was only the pain of working with shitty code on Windows which would have been more than enough from the start. Thankfully it only lasted a week. -
Real question tho. How do y'all actually put stickers directly on your laptop??
Like. For me that's some serious level of commitment. I always want to but I worry I'll hate it eventually and removing it would suck and scar
I can't even put stickers on the cases 😭😭 but like. Seeing a fresh new looking body when you take everything off is always soo soothing to me9 -
Welp. That was fun.
Just had an interview I wasn't even expecting. Basically the company emailed me saying that the role has been filled and as such the interview has been canceled.
And I'm like ok. Thanks for letting me know.
Then at literally the same time someone sent me a skype request asking me if I'm ready.
I get another email saying they're sorry about the inconvenience and hope my front end interview goes well... like. Wtf.
Why didn't they specify which? And why wait so long ffs.
I had two interviews with them. They stood me up on the last one and i emailed and never heard back.
So now I just had the most awkward interview in my life.
I was so rattled I forgot the answer to a simple af question. What's a JavaScript closure.
I wanna cry but it was so bad I wanna laugh3 -
So I've announced my leaving today and my dear line manager responded with asking if they could make me change my mind.
Like what makes you think this is up for debate? I literally noted I signed for another place. Maybe you should have thought of this when I a million times before said that I might leave if x or y doesn't change.
She also scheduled an "emergency meeting" with me for today. I'm eager to hear what she has to came up with..14 -
in the past 48 hours my partner must have asked me 50 times to create an "AI" that can get the data we need off of wikipedia.
Background: I am in AP Computer Science AB but I have been programming long enough that this class is a joke. We were assigned to partners with the task of creating a search engine that finds informations on wikipedia("which is dumb because thats what the search tool is for") so I created a Java Web-Scraping program in probably 30 minutes and showed my partner. He told me I am completely wrong because it would be "cool" to incorporate machine learning into the assignment.
Do I even tell his what machine learning is or should I just let his figure it out?7 -
Spent a lot of time designing a proper HTTP (dare I even say RESTful) API for our - what is until now a closed system, using a little-known/badly-supported message-over-websocket protocol to do RPC-style communications - supposedly enterprise-grade product.
I make the API spec go through several rounds of review with the rest of the dev team and customers/partners alike. After a few iterations, everybody agrees that the spec will meet the necessary requirements.
I start implementing according to spec. Because this is the first time we're actually building proper HTTP handling into the product, but we of course have to make it work at least somewhat with the RPC-style codebase, it's mostly foundational work. But still, I manage to get some initial endpoints fully implemented and working as per the spec we agreed. The first PR is created, reviews are positive, the direction is clear and what's there already works.
At this point in time, I leave on my honeymoon for two weeks. Naturally, I assume that the remaining endpoints will be completed following the outlines/example of the endpoints which I built. When I come back, the team mentions that the implementation is completed and I believe all is well.
The feature is deployed selectively to some alpha customers to start validation testing before the big rollout. It's been like that for a good month, until a few days ago when I get a question related to a PoC integration which they can't seem to get to work.
I start investigating and notice that the API hasn't been implemented according to the previously agreed upon spec at all. Not only did the team manage to implement the missing functionality in strange and some even broken ways, they also managed to refactor my previously working endpoints into being non-compliant.
Now, I'm a flexible guy. It's not because something isn't done exactly as I've imagined it that it's automatically bad. However, I know from experience that designing a good/clear/future-proof API is a tricky exercise. I've put a lot of time and effort into deliberate design decisions that made up the spec that we all reviewed repeatedly and agreed upon. The current implementation might also be fine, but I now have to go over each endpoint again and reason about whether the implementation still fulfills the requirements (both soft and hard) that we set out to meet.
I'm met with resistance, pushback and disbelief from product management and dev co-workers alike when I raise the concern that the API might actually not be production-ready (while I'm frantically rewriting my integration tests and figuring out how the actual implementation works in comparison to what was spec'ed).
Oh, and did I mention that product management wants to release this by end-of-week?!7 -
So I just finished a prototyp for my thesis. Still need to segment the real data myself and collect some statistics stuff to write about the network, but I am pretty proud of the result considering the dataset is very small.
For now I need some god damn sleep.5 -
Enough is enough! I can't do it anymore!

When will medium and its coding tutorials die out already? Why the hell are every fucking post of this plattform so cringy af, like tf why you start your tutorial with a fucking irrelevant meme you dumb asshole? Your code snippet is mostly garbage and you aint explain shit; I am not even sure if the code is yours. Go eat a dick and learn the subject properly before even start to teach people online.6

It means a lot to me to be able to rant and just get my thoughts out. Today I have been struggling with my mind again, finding no joy in software development. I feel like I can't catch up, I can't learn all that is needed to keep going on in the industry. I can't write any cool libraries or do anything really complex, no matter how much time I devote to learning and coding. And due to my late start in that career I feel absolutely worthless. The fact that I've been at this for 4+ years absolutely boggles my mind. In a more competitive work-place I would've have been sieved out.7
-
I've fucking had it with youtube, fucking jizz slapping knob butlers. I'm going to setup a mirror on my server, the idea is:
- Setup a youtube-dl cron that fetches multiple times a day both audio and video versions of the music playlist I have, hopefully with some sort of progress tracking of each download and total, so I could check if it has run successfully and have a nice dashboard, might need to do that myself (except if compactd proves itself to manage that all)
- Need to figure out a way to download the "best" quality but not go beyond 1080p, since if some videos for some reason are uploaded @ 4k, that'll be a waste of space
- Have Compactd/Funkwhale/Koel as the music player frontend for the audio version of the files, preferably one of them should offer download of the files too, so I could have a similar setup to spotify, though I could probably also just have some filebrowser installed or have a password protected index.
- Not sure what to use for the video versions, since sometimes the video goes with the music; plex? emby? suggestions are welcome
- Saw somebody (ab)using google drive as their backup for all the music they download, so I want to setup something similar, rsyncing all videos and music to some account, so in case shit majorly hits the fan, I can just download everything back15 -
So I had an interview. Went well. But apparently while they liked me I didn't show passion for development.
Any tips on how to that? Cause like... I like it and all but who really can show passion for working for someone else.
Tips please. Or job opportunities!!!23 -
Yeah I get what the intention was but like... why? I feel there are way better ways to do this
(Ps. I've become the pic post guy)8 -
Junior engineer asking managers on Slack about prioritisation..
Junior eng: Hey managers, I have these tasks A & B lined up and some other type of work... Is it ok if I finish A by Weds and B by the end of week or should it be done sooner? Also, is the order fine or should I prio B first?
*silence for hours*
Random dev feeling bad for junior getting no response chips in: Hey, you are doing great, that order makes sense to me and let me know if you need any guidance or have questions!
Junior dev: Thaanks and will do!
*another hour goes by*
Manager: Hi team. I have asked other engineer X to do task B tomorrow.
what the fuck. at least answer the fucking question and say it needs to be done sooner. felt bad for poor junior here. :/3 -

Regarding the Area 51 news. These guys are really stupid. They’ll deservedly got shot soon as they come close enough to the fence, and even if they get over, then what??
Anyone who know anything, knows that you need to spawn a jet pack, get to the second hanger ASAP, and jump in the Rhino. They can’t touch you after that, even with 5 stars!!6 -

My two cent: Java is fucking terrible for computer science. Why the fuck would you teach somebody such a verbose language with so many unwritten rules?
If you really want your students to learn about computer, why not C? Java has no pointer, no passed by reference, no memory management, a lots of obscure classes structure and design pattern, this shit is garbage. The student will almost never has contact with the compiler, many don't even know of existence of a compiler.
Java is so enterprise focused and just fucked up for educating purpose. And I say it as somebody who (still) uses it as main language.
If you want your students to be productive and learn about software engineering, why not Python? Things are simple in Python can can be done way easier without students becoming code monkeys (assuming they don't use for each task a whole library). I mean java takes who god damn class and an explicitly declared entry point which is btw. fucking verbose to print something into the console.
Fuck Java.17 -
If only.
Tbh. When I read about ruby and how it was meant to be as close to English as possible a little part of me was hoping for this1 -
So I've opened myself to new software engineering positions and was recommended one where the first *benefit* stated:
- High engagement opportunities across our global client base
Am I the only one for whom this is a gigantic red flag and con rather than a benefit? wtf4 -
Compiling software on Linux:
Python interpreter? Easy peasy, just some dependencies here and there. Make does a good job.
Linux kernel? Piece of cake, 20 years of development will be freshly served on your machine after one hour compiling (I have a pretty powerful computer).
Tensorflow? Fuck this shit I am outta.
What is your story with self-built software? Which piece of code has the most terrible dependency hell?5 -
Any fun self-hosted app or useful services you guys use on your own server?
For some weeks I have started to host my own git repository with gogs and take continious development into my control with jenkins and feel pretty neat.
Now I understand why my grandmother loves to raise her own food even when she could buy everything in the supermarket.11 -
Ok, I am actually losing my mind at this bad excuse of a work place.
This guy, that I had only briefly talked to in email twice before, never met or even had a video chat, opened a ticket like this:
"Hi Alt-Tab,
I hope you enjoyed the end of last week, the weekend, and the beginning of this one! All well here. I ventured to [random place in London] for the first time on Saturday – liked it."
Now. I already can't fucking stand when colleagues that are not at all close start emails with "how was your weekend?" shit because then I have to waste another minute addressing that. But this guy took it to such another level that I literally had to read his email 3 times to believe what I just witnessed.
And of course he then went on and described the issue as folows:
"Just a quick note about the issue I have - could you let me know why the calendars are not syncing?"
Maybe if you fucking spent half of the energy of you writing a polite bullshit "hello" and instead used that to actually describe the issue I could help.
Fuck off.22 -
Linux users, do you admin your server manually or do you use any web interface tool? After getting the third server of the day running I think I need a tool to make the work faster. Do you have any recommendation? Cpanel ist pretty neat but sadly not free10

I'm freaking done trying to get Linux on my machine. I've tried every distro with many different versions of the kernel and I always run into the same problem on my desktop.
The computer super stutters for 2 seconds ish than freezes.
I've spent DAYS looking into this issue trying to find something. The worst part is that it can happen 5 minutes when I boot or 5 hours. At first I thought it was Compton. Then I thought I installed arch wrong. Maybe an update to the BIOS? How about downloading updated microcode? Maybe this obscure bug with AMD processors and setting power idle to typical? Nothing. I'm now behind on my school work because of the massive amount of time ive spent getting this fixed. It works just fine on my laptop, but it doesn't work on the machine I built to code with. I'm done. Give me Force Lightning, a red lightsaber, and call me a Sith baby because I'm joining the dark side. Here I come Windows.
For those who are wondering my setup:
Ryzen 7 1700
Rx 480
Asus x-370 prime
16 gb Corsair RAM
And no, Windows has never had this bug.31 -
Five interviews and challenges later and I’m told they won’t be going further with me.
Over month of my life. Finally thought this was the one. But oh well. Depression.
I officially quit being a dev.
It’s been rad y’all.12 -
Passed a code test for once and invited to interview with engineers.
I’m nervous yet proud. Any tips? It’s the first time I’ve reached this point5 -
It all starts with a small regex script to automate my coding session. Now I start to automate every shit I used to hate (without notice it).
Where was Python all my life. Where was it when I have to configure my server, run integration tests or benchmark all by myself. The past was really scary 😂5 -
An update on my rant about that interview I had.
They emailed saying they're sorry I didn't pass etc.
My literal response was: wow. Shocker. No shit I didn't pass 😂 -
4 a.m. I got a nocturnal leg cramp so bad that I had to reinstall this app. Fuck forced homeoffice.4
-
LinkedIn recruiter:
- messages me about a fantastic job opportunity
- waits exactly 3 days
- messages me asking about the cool company I work at and how I find the engineering department here
- again 3 days
- messages me saying that he has heard some amazing recent news (there were none) about the fast growing company I work at and asks how I feel about the changes caused by our headcount growth
- 3 more days go by
- today, I get a notification that this recruiter has given me random LinkedIn endorsements for some skills that I had put on my profile back in college and since then forgot about even the existence of the endorsements feature
My favorite part is that the job they had originally sent expects a few languages and other tech skills most of which I actually have listed on my profile, but naturally, he only endorsed me for skills not required for said job spec.
What kind of weird sorcery is this?2 -
Do people really struggle with CSS?
I thought it was just design and ideas but is it actual CSS y’all struggle with?
Not judging. Just asking to be sure31 -
Management proposed to work with external freelancers, to "pick up speed so we can release these new designs sooner". We agreed, but of course we (the home team) can't have time to review their work because we need to develop other new features and bugfixes and such...
Weeks later, turns out that their changes are largely incompatible with the work we have been doing on the main branch. We are now rebasing/rewriting huge chunks of their work, probably taking as much time as it would have cost us to develop the design ourselves in the first place.4 -
This week at work I spent 20 hours debugging automated tests to avoid manual testing that would've taken a few hours.5
-
I think I did it. I did the thing I set out to do.
let p = a semiprime of simple factors ab.
let f equal the product of b and i=2...a inclusive, where i is all natural numbers from 2 to a.
let s equal some set of prime factors that are b-smooth up to and including some factor n, with no gaps in the set.
m is a the largest primorial such that f%m == 0, where
the factors of s form the base of a series of powers as part of a product x
1. where (x*p) = f
2. and (x*p)%f == a
if statement 2 is untrue, there still exists an algorithm that
3. trivially derives the exponents of s for f, where the sum of those exponents are less than a.
4. trivially generates f from p without knowing a and b.
For those who have followed what I've been trying to do for so long, and understand the math,
then you know this appears to be it.
I'm just writing and finishing the scripts for it now.
Thank god. It's just in time. Maybe we can prevent the nuclear apocalypse with the crash this will cause if it works.2 -
I hate having to deal with our IT service desk. Every time it takes enormous energy to get to the right people and make them understand that no, you are not an idiot, but you actually have a technical issue.
Sure thing they do have a few competent nice folks there too I've gotten to know over time and they indeed have to deal with a ton of dumb non-tech savvy idiots on a daily basis. However, if my job title mentions "software" and "engineer" they should at least assume I'm an idiot in tech. Or something. Every single time I need to open a ticket, even for the simplest "add x to env y", I need to quadruple check that the subject line is moron-friendly because otherwise they would take every chance to respond "nah we can't do that", "that's not us", or "sry that's not allowed". And then I would need to respond, "yes you do:) your slightly more competent colleague just did this for us 2 weeks ago".
Now you might imagine this is on even another level when the problem is complex.
One of our internal apps has been failing because one of the internal APIs managed by a service desk team responds a 500 status code randomly but only when called with a specific internal account managed by another service desk team.
(when I say "managed by", that doesn't mean they maintain it, it just mean they are the only ones who would have access to change something)
Yesterday I spent over a fucking hour writing a super precise essay detailing the issue, proving a million times it's not on our end and that they need to fix it. Now here is an insight to what beautiful "IT service" our service desk provides:
1) ticket gets assigned to a "Connectivity Engineer" lady
2) few hours later she responds and asks me to give her the app and environment IDs and grant her access to those
(naturally everything in my email was ignored including these two IDs)
3) since the app needs to be in prod for the issue, I make a copy isolating the failing part and grant her access to the original "for reference" and the copy to play with
4) few hours later I get an email from the env that some guy called P made changes to the actual app, no changes to the copy
(maybe they immediately fixed the app even though I asked them to only touch the copy)
I also check the env and the live app had been shared with another 2 people giving them editing rights:)
5) another few hours pass and the lady responds that she had been chatting with P (no mention of who tf that guy is) and that P has a suggestion that might work and I should test it, "please see screen shot" for details:
These motherfuckers sent me a fucking screenshot of the env config file where "P has edited a few parameters" that might help. The screenshot had a 16 line part of the config json with a bunch of IDs and Base64 params which HE EDITED LOCALLY.
Again, because I needed a few iterations to realise what I've just witnessed:
These idiots modified some things in the main app (not the copy) for hours. Then came to the conclusion that the config needs some IDs and params updated. They downloaded the config json. Edited it locally. Did not fucking upload it back to the main or test app. Did not test it live. Did not CC in or direct the guy with changes to me. Did not send me the modified config file. Did not even paste the new IDs into the email. But TOOK A FUCKING SCREENSHOT OF THE MODIFIED FILE AND SENT THAT SHIT TO ME. And then had the audacity to ask me to test it when they had access to it and that's literally their fucking job.
I had to compare the fucking screenshot to the live config file and manually type in the changes.
And no, it still doesn't work. And Now I have to get back to them showing it still fails the same way but I just can't deal with these people. Fuck. Was hoping by the time I write it all down it'd be better, and it does feel a bit better, but I still need to get this app fixed. And I can only do it through these... monkeys. I just can't. Talking to these people drains my life energy... I'm just sad. -
Out of nowhere my Linux Mint crashed and I can only enter emergency mode. What the hell Mr. Torvalds?
Thank god my home folder is in a separated partition and all my data is on remote git but I am atill very annoyed since the crash was in middle of my tunnel blick.18 -
So I've just had a meeting with a colleague of mine and, well, he didn't know I was leaving. It turns out, since Friday, my manager/management simply didn't announce it to those for whom it may be relevant because my manager thought they could make me stay.
It was a super awkward call in general and especially because they were hoping for my help on a future project. And now I feel bad for this guy as he was always very nice to me and also apologised a million times during the call for "his mistake". Then he even spent like 5 minutes searching for the announcement email in his inbox making it even more awkward when we both saw there was no such email sent.

Baby all I want for Christmas is Uuuuuuuuu-I design that made sense while being cute.

The IT policy at my company is down right ridiculous. You’re required admin rights to fucking move desktop shortcuts to the trash, all chrome extensions and almost anything you download from the internet is a ‘virus’, good luck getting driver support for external devices.2

Ooh. Here's a "deep" one.

B*tch, if the call is actually 1.5m there is no way we need that call. We can actually respond to your question in text quicker.

It's also fucking Friday afternoon.

I was given 6 whole months to rewrite some old monolithic web app exactly 5 months ago today. Now I have to show my boss the progress I've made. How do I explain him that I wasted my time in this order:
1.- heavy procrastination
2.- try new frameworks to work with, pick one, start writing the app, regret and start over again using a different framework.
3.- devrant
4.- existencial crisis and self doubt.
Now all I have are a bunch of incomplete buggy modules and a mental breakdown.8 -
Prequel to my previous post:
I received an offer from a startup that did not meet the originally advertised salary range. In every other aspect this place seemed like where I'd enjoy working the most and each previous interaction made a very good impression on me. So needless to say this was quite a shock.
They immediately apologised and explained the situation. They only now started to expand to and hire from my location (which can be verified) and I would be the very first person from this location (seems true too but I could only really verify this after joining). They explained the salary range I had seen was for their main hub location (accurate too) and said that the recruiter who posted the ad did not adjust it to mine. I asked why tf they didn't notify me of this earlier and they said they are super busy with everything, are new to location based salaries and normally don't check the recruiters posts as it should be her work.
Now, even if this is totally true, it was an awful sudden shock and felt a bit like a scam - totally contradicting my previous impressions.
Here are a couple of other points that I'll just sum to save time:
- before seeing the job ad I had a *reasonable* salary expectation even lower than their actual offering
- on the ad, the bottom end of their salary range far exceeded my reasonable exp.
- the relative level of my position would be even higher up the range that I have seen realised would be top 5%
- having had seen the ad, I started to have an *ideal* expectation being the bottom of the range
- in first interview I told them my exp. is the bottom end of their range +- a bit
- I told this to a dev guy who has no fucking idea about this stuff and I don't blame him but he noted this down to higher management
- generally I have not been very precise of my expectation as previously I only had lower class dev jobs, this would be the first decent.
- Hence I have seen an enormously high variation in salaries offered to me so this advertised range whilst high seemed possible
Now, with all this in mind I posted here a question about what some of you would do in my position.
I received the following group of responses:
- it's a scam, bad place, run
- it's an intentional (common) trick
- people make mistakes like this esp. startups so find out if this is intentional or not
- just decide if their current offering is reasonable for the position and location, ignore the rest
- just decide if the amount is enough
- location based salaries are retarded, don't work there (I kinda agree and also don't)
- if they can afford the higher pay in another place they should have no prob. meeting the range
- it's more important that you'd enjoy it there if the pay is sufficient for general needs
- company culture is generally more important these days
- fuck recruiters and hr people (amen to that btw)
Here is what I did:
Regardless of whether I believe them or not I hyperfocused on the potential scam/trick aspect.
I told them that every other interaction with them was positive and would love to join them but this was a really bad impression and feels like they are playing with me. I made up some bullshit previous examples of companies trying the same trick on me (which obv. never happened).
Then I said that I think to resolve this they should invite me to their main office for a day (all interviews had been online) and if after that they are still not ok to offer me at least the bottom of the adv. range then we can part ways. Otherwise this should ensure both of us that we are a good match, etc.
They seemed to love the idea and said that I should go there for x till y (3 days) and if we don't hate each other by the end I'll get the amount at the bottom of the range and they apologised again about it looking like a scam, etc.
So thanks a bunch again to those of you who provided valuable input. -
Didn't install linux for years now. Today, I have to and nothing changed about wifi drivers, at all ! Even the install process still sucks !

How long does it take you guys to learn Node JS?
My professor wants me to work for him on a CRUD Server for a semester, I have some experience with JavaScript and API programming with Spring Boot. Should I take the offer and learn more about Node at home?
I think I will feel like an imposter if I take the offer if I don't have any previous experience in the stack11 -
When I first began with Python I really missed the static typed checking from Java, I barely know anything about a returned object from a method and have to read the API extensively for every new library.
After a while I finally understand why Python is so powerful, the combination of dynamic typed language and rich default methods make the language unbeatable for your productivity.
While Java's Object only has toString(), hashCode(), equals() or clone(), Python's basic Class has every fucking method for every scenario I could ever image. No wonder that libraries like numpy or pandas work so well and fluidly.8 -
Went late in life to college.
Got my first IT Dev Job at 30
Now almost five years later, I'm depressed, realizing that I can't do this. I'm a horrible dev and not the kind of "horrible" that writes blog posts about how horrible they are while they maintain several libraries and casually make tutorials on YouTube.
I'm genuinely bad.
I tried learning and improving myself. But I'm always overwhelmed and frustrated, because there are so many things I don't understand. Learning anything takes me an incredible amount of time and then it's only on a superficial level, to the point I mostly memorise patterns but never truly understand. While others go through documentions and they understand everything, I have to find articles that explain solutions and concepts with super simple examples. Without Google I would be lost.
Online or in real life, I'm just getting baffled how poorly I compare to others.
I can't sleep, it's 3 am and I have a meeting in the morning. I still wasn't fired so far, but I should be fired. I messed up in all aspects of life, but realizing your choices were all wrong is dragging me down.3 -
Every bloody time I respond to a comment, devRant asks me to add my 2 cents. I only have pence here, and there is not fucking coin slot!!!! 😡

I am so sad. I've been having problems with Linux installs on my desktop since i built it. It just hangs at random times and the journals don't mention any problems. I finally catch a lead and it turns out it's a bug with the microcode of the Ryzen processors. There was a possible work around, but it didn't work for me.
Guess I'm just going to have to use Windows exclusively on my desktop. I hope for a fix but the bug has been around for a year. :(4 -
Anyone else like... REALLY bad at algorithms and logic stuff?
I just hate them so much.
Tell me to build something and gg done. But all these tests for jobs freak me out.
Like. It probably ends up being something simple and when it's explained I know what to do but at first I just instantly shut down and can't think.5 -
So what exactly is it like working as a developer?
I'm still in the learning phase but I can't seem to picture what exactly it is you'll be doing daily if you get hired.
Is it like constant coding? But like, the site is already made and is huge.
Or is it like making new stuff? But then like, there's already a big company site.
It's what I wanna do but I honestly can't imagine how it will work different from doing it for yourself7 -
Anyone know small-medium companies hiring front end devs around the eu?

"The thing I want to change is very simple.."
Day starts off great again by manager saying the above - which is already problem with her limited technical knowledge - and then she proceeds by wanting to change multiple properties of a primary key in our live db.

Started a new job at a big firm (previously came from a startup). Both do "scrum". Still have my mind blown because at the new job, we have people join the standup of which NOBODY in the team knows what their role is on the product...
Does this happen often in big corporates?5 -
Yesterday at my career progression chat my manager told me that to showcase more seniority I would need to "stop moving the needle by myself and become a multiplier".

Fucking Browser autocorrect!
You type the same address a hundred times, every time hoping it’ll guess the address after the first.... second..... third.... character. No, it shows you a similarly named site that you went on months ago. End up having to type most of the domain name before it catches it.
Then, one day, you hastily mis-spell the address and press enter, now autocorrect keeps fucking directing you to there!!8 -

As usual before sleeping i set a timer for shutdown cuz i use my hotspot to surf devrant in bed before sleeping.
My roommate( lets call him AB) sees me writing the command.
AB: what are you doing?
Me: setting a timer to shutdown my computer.
AB: oh nice i want that too... is it just a linux thing?
Me: nope u can do it on windows.. just search the cmd command on google and u are good to go.
AB: you do it. You search.
Me: huh? Why would i do that? Bitch it is simple just google "cmd command shutdown timer" and open the first result.
AB: *extremely dissapointed face and starts searching* i dont understand anything.
Me: AB! The instructions literally explain everything! I can see!!
AB: you are good at computers, u are a computer engineer (im just a second year student)
Me: fuck off *i go to sleep*
Next day i learned that he did it after i left him, and that it did shutdown but he wasnt done with his work and he was too lazy to google how to cancel it.... JUST GOOGLE DAMMIT!!! -
I guess I should relate what work experience I have: my internship.
A little backstory I suppose. It's required at my school to do an internship to graduate except under certain circumstances. They encourage work experience a lot where I study. It was around time for me to apply for internships. However, the closest I got was a phone call with Amazon that I biffed when they started asking about stuff like sorting algorithms and other Big O notation stuff. So I was pretty desperate. I found a small company that were looking for internships and got an interview with them. The pay was dirt (I made more as a crew trainer at McDonalds) but I needed that internship and they were only 10 minutes away.
Immediate red flags when I showed up to the address. At first I thought I was wrong, But I noticed the sign of the company pointing up some stairs that were installed on the side of the house I was in front of.
Interview was a bit weird. It was with the CEO and the marketing manager. Again red flags. I show up for work a week later.
Turns out, they have no full time developers. 1st day was getting my workstation ready and 2nd day I was running Ethernet cables to the basement where the phones were connected. Spent around a week doing that.
This was supposed to be a Software Engineering internship?? Excuse me?? I came here to learn how working on Software is supposed to be like! I was also their "tech support" both for their computers and their crappy software that was built 16 years ago that people still pay for that I had NO idea how it worked because I just started and NOBODY taught me anything! To make matters worse, even if I wanted to delve into the code to see how it works it was all made in ancient Perl which didn't make things any easier.
But I needed that internship to graduate. And thus begun my 9 months with them and boy howdy I have stories to tell. Stay tuned in the future.3 -
I keep posting that I need job and I appreciate the feedback but I feel just saying that makes it seem like I'm not trying.
Like. I legit don't know. Could it be my cv that's a dud? Thinking of paying a resume writing thing
Cause I'm actually trying hard af to learn new stuff as well keep doing what I'm good at.
I got one interview in a year and even then they didn't gimme the chance to show tech side. It's soo tilting.
I'm actually competent though inexperienced I think.
Any advice or questions please. I legit need to sort this out this year. Like its very important that I do.

Do you have a routine? I work from home everyday since quarantine and I don't think we are going back to the office.

I'm looking for a way to scatter my working hours so I have chunks of focus and chunks of breaks in which I go out for a walk or something instead of a big chunk of focus mixed with distraction. I'm behaving as if it were a "9-5 job" when it is actually "8 hours per day" with flexible schedule.8 -

I need your thoughts on a privacy related matter. I find this fact being very provocative.
So, at work we use Gmail:
Person AB has email AB@company.tld
Person ABC has email ABC@company.tld
How is it that when you send an e-mail to AB, that ABC sends back a god damn Out-of-office, without ABC being in either To, CC or BCC?
I reckon that the mailbox AB is owned by said company, and ABC is the owner of all those accounts. But shouldn't the contents of such mailbox still be private in some regard? (At least until AB isn't in the company anymore?)
It's funny, as a customer said she got an out of office from ABC, while solely sending one to AB.. I noticed this a few weeks back, and I'm rather infuriated by the fact that there's a possibility that every e-mail AB reveives, also ends up in in ABC's box.

I’m always tired all the time. Depression and what not but today I am TIRED
Had an interview that requires vanilla javascript but I suck at algos even tho I was getting it done till time ran out. We gelled tho so I hope they see potential and move to next round.
But the good news is. I had a follow up interview based on a challenge. It’s the second I’ve ever had and I did well this time.
So much so that they’re booking another interview for tomorrow.
So I’m done with the technical portions of the process.
This is the first time I’ve gotten this far and I’m so happy. I’m hoping really that this is the one cause I doubt I have the energy and will power to keep going though the processes.
I’m so excited. It’s as if all my work is slowly showing and I’m getting closer and closer
Wish me luck guys. Hopefully I ace it as I come across well In General Chats.
This is my last application. If it doesn’t work I think I’m done with dev life and job hunt.
Fingers crossed I’ve found the one1 -
I feel like that most +1's are given during the work hours when the devs are twiddling their thumbs or waiting for the codes to compile. So here is a rant testing this hypothesis.

It's bad enough that Facebook videos in my country have ads but some cunt actually had the genius idea to make the tagline for their ad "Un-skippable quality"
Not sure I can even be mad at how trolly that is 😭😂3 -
Guys. please help.
I’m trying to build something with multiple crud pages using and angular and rails.
For some reason when I attempt to go one of the routes it fails and goes straight to the backup(otherwise).
It’s the patients/new route that isn’t working. Everything else seems fine so I’m not sure what else to add to the question. I’ve tried changing things around to narrow down the problem and I’m almost convinced it’s from the routes. The button works fine when I link to other pages.

In spent more than an hour trying to figure out why a form didn't work.
I pressed the submit button and nothing happened, no error in the console and nothing in the Network tab in Chrome's devtools. And the action was being executed!
Then I found out there was a catch somewhere. I removed and it said that the url was wrong. But again, I debugged it and nothing seemed wrong. I even hardcoded the values.
At the end, it turned out that the initial "/" was missing in the request url... -
My team for the uni project is quite big (8 people) and we need to create a progressive web app. The problem is I am the only one who know some JavaScript and I am not even good at it. Does somebody have tips how to learn web dev quickly?4
-
I'm tired of react.js' overbearing presence in almost all facets of development. It doesn't matter what kind of job postings I see, Front- or Backend Developer, a baffling amount of companies want react, react-native, next.js, etc. I'm exhausted by people singing high-praises to its name, hearing ad-nauseam, that it is the most immaculate 'framework' to ever exist. Everything that react does makes - of course - sense and is the only logical way to do web-dev and the react-way worms it way to other technologies as well.
"React is the fastest, bestest and most popular ever and you should feel ashamed for not having mastered it. By the by, since it's so easy to use and learn, if you can't build a high-complexity enterprise SPA within a week with it, you must suck as a dev".
True, nobody words it like that, but that's how I feel about almost any react related articles that pops up every single time. I couldn't get into react. I didn't find it easy and I never could adopt that thought-model necessary to work with it for any even mildly complicated SPA and boy, did I get some nasty feedback for it. I get it, I do. I'm slow and definitely not proud of it, but react simply makes no sense to me. I'm not even saying that react is bad. It's just not my kind of technology. The fact that I used nest.js for a backend application makes feel bad, because it's "too much like Angular".
Everything has to be "react" nowadays and that's how I feel every single day, while I have that damocles sword looming over my head.
The current dev-world makes me want to abandon anything IT related at this point. It's simply not fun, it's more suffocating than it ever was.7 -
Hello, Hi! Friendly neighbourhood noob here!
What’s he stuck on today you ask? React and Firebase!
Did he try? Yes he did! Only a little hitch this time.
Really? Little?
...It’s all relative... like the truth!
Anyway PLEASE someone look at my StackOverflow question!!

Firebase and react are awesome tbh. But I cant figure this out!

Made a friend when I did my first cosplay last October. This year was my 3rd year of studies, and I had to do ab internship sometime in the year. Friend hooked me up with their SO's company. This company shares the office with my current company due to long stories (it's an amicable relationship). After my internship the CEO of the other company offered my a 3 month contract back in March, which got extended until January. So here I am, working in Edutech helping the local South African colleges.1

Hello council of elders.. or should I say "console"? Heh? Heh? I've been up for a long time sorry.
Anyway. I've started learning framework stuff. Angular right now. Been long overdue tbh. And I found a free course on udemy and followed it. It's cool and everything but I gotta ask...
Why can't I just use vanilla js and everything from scratch? I'm not sure if its the course I'm using (I'd appreciate more resources. Thanks) but I feel like it's a lot of effort. Is there something I'm missing or haven't learned yet?
It might sound stupid please let me know why it's better to use that than regular methods. Apparently it's meant to make stuff easier but I feel like it's just a lot linking files and making various things in different places.
Also. Other stupid question which might just be cause of the course but like... Is it mostly just for manipulating json??
Thanks. More questions to come soon!!3 -

Today my old professor wrote on my school's slack channel that someone was needing some js and css work on their web page. Even though i have a good grasp of programming (I've been studying for 7 years while working as McDonald's to pay), front end web work isn't my forte, but I might be able to do it.
On the one hand it would be nice to have something to show to potential employers, but I'm a bit too nervous and I'm not interested in doing front end for future employment. What was it like when you received your first client? Nervous? Confident? I want to hear everyone's early experiences. -
- Finish "Introduction to algorithms"
- Learn some genetic algorithms
- Get my hands dirty on reinforcement learning
- Learn more about data streaming application (My currently app is still using plain stupid REST to transport image). I don't know, maybe Kafka and RabbitMQ.
- Learn to implement some distributed system prototypes to get fitter at this topic. There must be more than REST for communicating between components.
- Implementing a searching module for my app with elastic search.
- Employ redis at sometime for background tasks.
- Get my handy dirty on some operating system concepts (Interprocess Communication, I am looking at you)
- Take a look at Assembly (I dont want to do much with Assembly, maybe just want to implement one or two programs to know how things work)
- Learn a bit of parallel computing with CUDA to know what the hell Tensorflow is doing with my graphic card.
- Maybe finishing my first research paper
- Pass my electrical engineering exam (I suck at EE)1 -
Out of curiosity, how many years of PROFESSIONAL experience do people have on here. I’m assuming it’s quite diverse but skewed towards those at junior to mid-level for some reason. Just put a number down. I’ll start.

Heres the initial upgraded number fingerprinter I talked about in the past and some results and an explanation below.
Note that these are wide black images on ibb, so they appear as a tall thin strip near the top of ibb as if they're part of the website. They practically blend in. Right click the blackstrip and hit 'view image' and then zoom in.

https://paste.ofcode.org/an4LcpkaKr...
Hastebin wouldn't save for some reason so paste.ofcode.org it is.
Not much to look at, but I was thinking I'd maybe mark the columns where gaps occur and do some statistical tests like finding the stds of the gaps, density, etc. The type test I wrote categorizes products into 11 different types, based on the value of a subset of variables taken from a vector of a couple hundred variables but I didn't want to include all that mess of code. And I was thinking of maybe running this fingerprinter on a per type basis, set to repeat, and looking for matching indexs (pixels) to see what products have in common per type.
Or maybe using them to train a classifier of some sort.
Each fingerprint of a product shares something like 16-20% of indexes with it's factors, so I'm thinking thats an avenue to explore.
What the fingerprinter does is better explained by the subfunction findAb.
The code contains a comment explaining this, but basically the function destructures a number into a series of division and subtractions, and makes a note of how many divisions in a 'run'.
Typically this is for numbers divisible by 2.
So a number like 35 might look like this, when done
p = 35
((((p-1)/2)-1)/2/2/2/2)-1
And we'd represent that as
ab(w, x, y, z)
Where w is the starting value 35 in this case,
x is the number to divide by at each step, y is the adjustment (how much to subtract by when we encounter a number not divisible by x), and z is a string or vector of our results
which looks something like
ab(35, 2, 1, [1, 4])
Why [1,4]
because we were only able to divide by 2 once, before having to subtract 1, and repeat the process. And then we had a run of 4 divisions.
And for the fingerprinter, we do this for each prime under our number p, the list returned becoming another row in our fingerprint. And then that gets converted into an image.
And again, what I find interesting is that
unknown factors of products appear to share many of these same indexes.
What I might do is for, each individual run of Ab, I might have some sort of indicator for when *another* factor is present in the current factor list for each index. So I might ask, at the given step, is the current result (derived from p), divisible by 2 *and* say, 3? If so, mark it.
And then when I run this through the fingerprinter itself, all those pixels might get marked by a different color, say, make them blue, or vary their intensity based on the number of factors present, I don't know. Whatever helps the untrained eye to pick up on leads, clues, and patterns.
If it doesn't make sense, take another look at the example:
((((p-1)/2)-1)/2/2/2/2)-1
This is semi-unique to each product. After the fact, you can remove the variable itself, and keep just the structure in question, replacing the first variable with some other number, and you get to see what pops out the otherside.
If it helps, you can think of the structure surrounding our variable p as the 'electron shell', the '-1's as bandgaps, and the runs of '2's as orbitals, with the variable at the center acting as the 'nucleus', with the factors of that nucleus acting as the protons and neutrons, or nougaty center lol.
Anyway I just wanted to share todays flavor of insanity on the off chance someone might enjoy reading it.1 -

Generally have great experience with our management.
I work at a scale-up, so I've had some run-ins with the founder shifting priorities too often in the early days, but he's got enough notion of tech to understand when we're telling about the why(not)s of what we can and can't do
A while back we got a product owner/manager/scrum master and he's great too. I've had times when he put pressure on making deadlines when it was really not helping, but overall great guy with a lot of empathy and respect for his team.
But recently I've been starting to feel like we (the dev team) are getting more and more excluded from the decision-making process of the features & designs that we're going to be working on. We used to have a say in what we felt like was a good idea for a feature or a design, but it feels to me like we don't get asked that question any more of late...
Not sure if I'm imagining it, or overreacting to a logical (possibly positive?) evolution in our development workflow... -

3 days ago i started home workouts after 3 long years of not doing it. By following THENX on youtube. It was a 20 minute ab workout. I fucked myself over. I am in SO MUCH PAIN for several days now. Every day I'm in more pain. I cant stand straight because of how much it fucking hurts. My stomach muscles are FUCKED. It feels like i got punched and beaten in the hips and stomach. Hey so I have to make something using both angular and rails and I wanna ask. After I manage to get angular running on rails, do I just proceed to build what I wanted on angular normally? Or is there a special way I have to do.
I'm learning to build something but I can't find specific guides on how to combine those to do so.
So I've found how to make it without rails. And how to link angular and rails. My plan is to learn both seperately then add. Will that work?
Sorry. My words are muddled. I'm just so tired.2 -

Only last month I removed a file called 'statuspage.aspx', this file has been sat there for years on our customer sites.

Had a really really good interview last week I think. And the weirdest thing was that he was friends with my ex bosses so we talked about them a lot. Lots of jokes. So I thought ooh slam dunk.

Hello Devrant! It’s ya boi!
Update. Currently back in school in the Netherlands. Studying law and technology. Yeet.
But yeahhhh so stressed omfg. Finals already in October. This school is a mess.
And I’m the middle of that my thesis got rejected so here I am. Crying. Asking y’all for ideas. Anything you can think of please say.

all I’ll say is that the last one they said was too vague and not specific enough. And ideally it should be AI or data science but anything tech would do.
Not sure if this is the place to ask but thank youuu.9 -

Question for someone who uses Mongo Atlas Search:
If I'm only interested in autocomplete from the start of the text, which is more performant?
1) standard analyzer + edgeGram tokenizer
2) keyword analyzer + edgeGram tokenizer
I don't see why I should index separate words if I don't care about random positions :/
