Why 95%+ devs are bad ???
Just did a recruitement for a post opf Principal Engeneer with possibuility to be CTO.
375 candidats at first interview.
Only 8 remaining for second phase
Our of 8, only 3 managed to complete a small code test.
Outr of 3, one asked for (I shit you not) 700k$ salary (lolz).
Out of 2 remaining, 1 just decided "I did for lolz to see if I get an offer so I can boost my current work salary",
Leaving us with only 1 candidate...
So fucking time consuming.....17 -
I hope this is not illegal content, as I don't want to "Advertise" here but would like to share my first game on Steam with the community, as I am really proud of it.
There's a free playtest soon and dev opinions are much appreciated! Let me know guys what you think. https://store.steampowered.com/app/...13 -
The world makes no fucking sense.
In 2013 I had a manager approve a couple days' leave coz my son was having medical issues.
He was super nice about it and told me I could take as much time as I needed. I said, a couple days is enough. I took Thursday and Friday off. I took two days.
On Monday, an emergency meeting was held with the CTO (it was a small company, it went me -> manager -> C suite). I was told that a production deployment happened on Friday that fucked up a few clients' systems and that it had cost said clients hundreds of thousands dollars and are now suing the company.
Turns out on Friday, lead developer was also given the day off for whatever reason and I was being scolded because as the next senior developer, it was my responsibility to review code and make sure shit like this doesn't happen.
I agreed (and still agree) but also explained I had already filed leave weeks prior and I wasn't informed about dev lead's absence. Sure I could've checked my messages but my kid was in the hospital and I was busy. Still I couldn't help but feel a little guilty.
Manager holds a separate meeting with me and talks me into just writing an apology note in the email chain and he'll do the rest of the talking for me and make sure I get minimal punishment. I trusted him, he was the one who found me and brought me into the company (I know, I was naive).
So I wrote the email. It was a small note. I apologized for not checking messages and explained my situation again and mentioned I would've definitely checked if I was informed that the lead dev would be away.
Another meeting was held the next day and after pleasantries the Manager started with this, "Ok so we've all seen the email and understand that this was all Angry's fault right?".
Now, we're not native English speakers and Manager doesn't really do well with grammar. I was alarmed by what he said but wasn't angry because I was pretty sure that's not what he meant. I'm sure he meant to say that "Angry feel's guilty but his actions were understandable given the circumstance" or that he forgot a "not" in there and really meant "not Angry's fault". Surely this is what he meant to say. Right?
But then the rest of the meeting went on and I was unceremoniously let go. Immediately for "failing to accomplish my tasks and costing the client 100Ks of dollars". I wasn't even given a chance to say anything else.
The meeting ended and since we were both in the office, Manager approached me with exit papers and a check (~1200 USD)--it was my month's pay. I was asked to leave that day and was told I didn't need to come back. No handovers, no knowledge transfers, not a even a documentation of open projects I was handling.
I realized I just was made the scapegoat by a management screwup that costed our clients a lot of money.
Of course, I wrote the CEO multiple emails the next couple days. I also cc'd the CTO. No response.
A couple of weeks pass, I get another job at a cool company and i promptly move on.
I write this story now because I just found out today that in 2016, Manager was let go by the company for **sexual harassment**. Apparently, he actually did it too according to friends I still had within the company.
Here's where it gets fucked up. He turns and sues the company for unlawful termination and I guess to avoid a long legal battle? the company settled. They fucking settled and handed this man 2 Million PHP (at the time about 40k USD).
2 fucking million. Life changing money around here. And he got it by being a slimy piece of shit.
The world makes no fucking sense.9 -

The twitch ai just banned my account

O the irony. 😹 😆 😂
What would you or should i say to the twitch devs or ai?30 -
I've spent too much time online... I'm in a zoom meeting, I missed what someone said, reached to my keyboard to rewind then realised it was live... 🙈13

Got an error trying to [Leave] a meeting in Teams
*sigh....*
Just Teams being Teams...
Now I'm probably stuck in that meeting somewhere deep in MS's servers forever.3 -
Like seriously how fucked up are those ORMs? Prisma “yeah we support mongodb, but we will force you to write in a relational way.” I always hit on hard walls whenever ever I try an ORM in my projects.
Don’t get me wrong they are good for dummy stuff. But if you want to go a little bit crazy with mongo, embedded documents with refs it’s a mess…
Typescript and good old mongodb adapter bb anything else.14 -
The plural of schema is schemata, and the plural of index is indices.
Words with irregular plurals are interesting, stop trying to force them to be like normal words.17 -
YouTube API is an absolute joke. Reached the goddamn quota limit while integrating live chat and streaming. Pathetic.
Literally gave me like 6 API calls before rate limiting me.
About to scrap this integration.6 -
Does anyone else here have coding-fatigue?
Like if someone gives me a problem (BIG or small), I can chalk out an architecture or "oh you can use this-n-this-n-this"
But if you ask me to code it, though it's easy as fuck, I dont want to and will drag it until I gush 2 coffees to force myself to do it.
You give me a junior dev who knows NOTHING and does the typing and I can guide him and make him do it all, but by myself? nah
PS: this only applies to work-code that isnt "fun" per-se. My own projects? no issues at all12 -
Currently trying to make newer C++11 code run on a gcc 4.8 compiler. Also making Qt 5 code run on Qt 4.8. Enabling experimental flags on gcc like std=c++1y and turning on flags to turn off complaints about pre c++11 code. Have my cake and eat it too. My favorite so far it to create a proxy object so I can connect lambdas to Qt signals. This is supported in Qt 5, but not Qt 4. I feel like I am traveling back in time to when stuff was shittier standards wise.5

I am (re)learning .NET, but on Ubuntu using Rider. I will tell you what, it feels SO weird, given .NET has been only possible on Windows for many years. It feels out of place to me.5

Before I left for vacation two weeks ago, I busted my butt to build out another portion of my frontend testing framework and get it in place (and spec’d) to unblock a coworker on a semi-high-priority ticket. I sent him detailed notes on which areas of the product it covers, how to use it, and copied one of his (blocked) tests over and updated it to use the new methods, pattern, namespacing, etc.
I came back today and discovered … he hasn’t even touched it. Everything is exactly as I left it.
Wheeeeeee.12 -
Holy heavens! I'm gonna work with a js framework at my day job.
After installing nodejs I'm immediately greeted by a warning that something is somehow broken. Installing the packages for the barebones repo leads to hundreds of dependencies and vulnerability warnings. I don't even know anything beyond document.getElementById().
On a scale of 1 to Squidward Tentacles, how much am I gonna hate my job?10 -
python devs are not devs
why do you need numpy and 30 other packages to change some lights on a keyboard
and then the kicker is that it doesn't even work, because it can't find a daemon I guess
this is so fragile
so ridiculous
every time, these math people14 -
Was playing fallout 4 a couple days ago. About 20 minutes in. The computer just shuts off. Like no power at all. I start up the computer again. Try fallout 4 again. It shuts off at the beginning video. WTF... I try Skyrim wondering if video card is busted. Skyrim runs perfectly fine. I startup Fallout 4 again. It runs. WTF...
Next day I try fallout and bout 20 minutes in power off again. Now I am assuming cooling issue and I am trying to see temps with programs. Cannot really tell.
So today I take apart my laptop and vacuum every cooling orifice out. Vacuum any dust looking crap I can see. There was dust in the fans. All clean. I run a memory test for a couple hours. Memory passes (it was brand new memory, thought maybe flaw in ram). Now I run fallout 4. Runs fine, zero issues for about an hour.
Me to myself: CLEAN YOUR DAMN COMPUTER MORE OFTEN! Okay...
In between I read about Fallout 4 causing system reboots and shutdowns due to loading and heating. Apparently something about Fallout 4 causes this more than other games. Wild... Pretty sure it was thermal shutdown protection going on.3 -
Last week a user couldn't find a document in sharepoint. Typed (what he thought) was the exact file name in the search -> no results.
I know how to get 'under the hood', so I looked where I thought the file was, found it, and it was exactly as he searched for it. What the hell? Wasn't a new file, it wasn't moved/renamed, no reason why it couldn't be found.
I 'touched' the file. Waited 5 minutes and searched again, found it. What the frack Microsoft!14
